History of Whaling in SE Alaska
The City Museum and the Juneau Public Libraries (JPL) are participating in the NEA Big Read, a program of the National Endowment of the Arts. Each year, participating libraries across the nation choose a book and encourage community members to read and participate in library sponsored events about the content. This year, the book is, In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex.

As part of the Big Read, the Museum will be hosting a City Salon with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries. This program will focus on the history of whaling in SE Alaska, the biology and health of our whales and best practices for whale watching.

Free copies of the book are available a the City Museum and at the Public Libraries.

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum fosters among its diverse audiences an awareness of Juneau's cultural heritage, values and community memory so we may draw strength and perspective from the past, inspire learning, and find purpose for the future. As a public trust, we collect, preserve, interpret, and exhibit those materials that document the cultures and history of the Juneau and Douglas area.
