Time For a Tune Up Spring officially starts on Monday! That means its time to get your bike ready for the long season ahead - whether you bring it to a shop (do that soon, because they are getting very busy), or do it yourself, your bike needs as much TLC as you do in order to be successful.
The Major Taylor Cycling Club of Chicago is hosting a Bike Maintenance Class this weekend to help you prepare! Bring your own tire to learn how to change a flat, learn how to use C02 inflators, and learn basic road bike maintenance, including cleaning and lubrication.
The class will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Urban Tri Gear - Bike Sales and Repair in Westmont. Arrive early so you can have lunch at the Citrus Dinner next door to Urban Tri Gear! |
A Pre-Season Cycling Checklist There are many things a cyclist needs to pay attention to throughout the winter to ensure they have the best shot at a healthy and successful upcoming race season.
Now that we are on the downslope of the cold days, the time has come to start shifting training and ensure the springtime pre-race preparation line items are getting checked o the to-do list. This way, race day number one of your personal campaign can begin with a clear mind and sound body.
Here's a quick starting guide to get that pre-race season checklist complete! |
Congress Could Dump Wilderness Bike Ban
Some of America's most pristine wild places could be opened to mountain biking under a proposal before Congress.
A bill by Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., would lift a decades-old national ban on biking in federally designated wilderness areas.
It's similar to a bill that died in the previous session of Congress.
Proponents say it's an attempt to give people a chance to pedal through serene locales that currently allow hiking, backpacking and horseback riding but not mountain biking.
"This bill is actually going to increase the wilderness experience for all trail users," said Craig Weaver, 35, a Reno, Nev., mountain biker in favor of changing the law. "What makes sense for the hiking community should make sense for the mountain biking community."

Ride Forward: A Brief Wish List For Chicago Biking They tell us Chicago is the best biking city in America-and by several gauges, it does indeed stand out. We have miles of bike lanes, an active and passionate cycling community, an expanded bike-share network, a committed legal and advocacy framework and much more.
Still, why let the good be the enemy of the great? With spring about to roll in and more riders looking pedal up, it seemed like a good time to take inventory of what we, as cyclists ourselves, would still love to see in terms of both policy and infrastructure.
Check out Chicagoist's picks - both serious and whimsical - here. Do you agree?
