Share Your HEAL Campaign With >>>>

Has your city or town been hard at work on HEAL policies, practices, and programs? Have you ever wondered how to share your progress with local media, municipal staff, or residents? The HEAL Campaign has recently developed a Communications Toolkit to help our cities and towns easily share their HEAL accomplishments with their target audience. From identifying media platforms to sample messaging, this resource will help you bring attention to the health and wellness initiatives in your city or town.
Whether you're a new HEAL city interested in sharing your new HEAL status or a long time HEAL member interested in sharing a new policy achievement -- this toolkit is for you.
To kick it off, this month we're asking our members to share why your city or town joined the HEAL Campaign. Tag us on Twitter (@HEALMidAtlantic) and use the hashtag #WhyHEALCampaign. Share an image from your city or town or use one of the ready-to-use sample graphics from the
Toolkit. We're looking forward to hearing why HEAL is important to our cities and towns!

Next week, the HEAL Campaign will recognize Virginia HEAL members at the Virginia Municipal League (VML) Annual Conference in Roanoke. We are excited to have the opportunity to welcome new members to the Campaign and award our current members for achieving new HEAL policy goals.
While we are no longer accepting applications for the upcoming award ceremony, we hope that all our Virginia members will attend the recognition ceremony on Tuesday, October 8th. We will be recognizing all HEAL members and taking a group photo after the awards ceremony.
Throughout the conference, the HEAL staff will be at
Booth #203. As always, we will have resources, healthy snacks, and our famous infused water. Come say hi and tell us about your successes and challenges with your HEAL implementation. Looking forward to seeing you there!

HEAL Spotlight | Crewe, Virginia
|
In 2012, the Town of Crewe became the first member of the HEAL Campaign. Since then, the Town has made significant strides to incorporate healthy eating and active living as fundamental components of the Town's environment and culture. Crewe has achieved the Campaign's Gold Level recognition for its efforts to bring healthier choices to this small, rural community. Read the article

Report | State of Obesity 2019: Better Policies for a Healthier America - The
Trust for America's Health recently released "
State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America."
This annual report includes national obesity trends and individual state data. The data shows obesity rates are at 35% or higher in nine states, compared with seven sates in 2018. Further, obesity data continues to show disproportionately higher numbers among minority groups and rural communities. Webinar | Active Parks, Healthy Cities: Increasing Physical Activity Among Teen Girls and Seniors - This webinar from City Parks Alliance shares recent findings from their report, "National Study of Neighborhood Parks," that found that teen girls and seniors are often underrepresented in parks. This webinar explores
creative models and programs that have successfully engaged these underrepresented demographics in physical activity in their parks and community spaces. Learn about innovative programs from Cleveland Ohio and Jasper, Indiana -- two communities that are helping increase physical activity for youth and older adults. Smart Cities Collaborative
- For the third year, Transportation for America is accepting applications for the Peer City Collaborative and Pilot City Collaborative. These programs provide direct technical assistance to accepted cities interested in advancing smart mobility policies and projects. Through convening, remote meetings, and webinars, the Collaborative provides valuable resources to
enable participants to learn from their peers to implement smart mobility concepts. Three cities will be accepted for the free Pilot Cities program, and 12 cities will be accepted for the Peer Cities program, which costs $4,500. The application is due on October 7th, 2019. Learn more.

2020 Culture of Health Prize

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize elevates communities that are working at the forefront of advancing health, opportunity, and equity for all. The $25,000 prize elevates the compelling stories of community members who are working together to transform neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and more-so that the opportunity for better health flourishes for all.
US communities, including cities and towns, are
eligible
to apply -- applicants must be more than a single organization. Applications are due by November 4th, 2019.
