FEATURED EVENT: Interactive Health & Science Camp at Liberty High School
In late June, students in grades 7-10 from Poynter Middle School and Liberty High School had a chance to explore health science occupations through a leadership and health science camp led by Liberty's Health Science students and teacher Ramona Toth. Made possible by a $5,000 grant from Kaiser Permanente, each day of the camp was filled with unique experiences, such as visiting the biotechnology program at PCC, participating in station activities using medical instruments at Premier Jets - an ambulatory international flight company - learning about biomedical research at the Oregon National Primate Center, visiting Kaiser's Westside Medical facility, practicing suturing, and much more! Click here to see a brief video of the camp.

First Days of School and Academic Seminar
Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! The first day of school for students in grades 1-6, 7 and 9 is Tuesday, Sept. 4; for students in grades 8 and 10-12 is Wednesday, Sept. 5; and for kindergartners is Thursday, Sept. 6. Every Wednesday, including Sept. 5, schools will operate on an Academic Seminar schedule.

Attendance Matters
Every minute of every day matters in a child's education. Too many absences - excused or unexcused - can keep students from achieving their full potential in school and in life. Check out our website for more information and some useful attendance tools.

Back-to-School Activities
Several of our schools are hosting back-to-school activities this week, so don't miss out! Please visit your school's website for other important back-to-school announcements.

Important Information about School Bus Service
Busing information for all students is now available using the " MyBus" tab on our website. Please note that due to a national shortage of bus drivers, there may be delays and disruptions to normal bus service.

Bus Drivers Needed
HSD is in need of several bus drivers! These are 6-hour-per-day positions offering benefits, paid training, coverage for all licensing and fees after successful completion of training, and hourly rates of $16.03-$17.49. Learn more and apply on the  Job Listings page of our website.

Free and Reduced-Price School Meals
This year, eligibility for several HSD schools to serve meals at no cost to all students expires. Meals will still be served free of charge to all families who need assistance; however, those families must now apply for benefits. Additional information is available on the Nutrition Services page of our website.

District and City of Hillsboro Partner on Internet Connectivity
One of the key technology projects in HSD's 2017 bond is building out a fiber network to all schools. And one of the City of Hillsboro's initiatives is to expand its existing fiber network to residents, including those in future communities like South Hillsboro. Now, the two entities are announcing a partnership in those efforts that will save millions of taxpayer dollars.

Bond Update

This summer, over 40 projects around the district have been completed or are near completion. The most visible projects are: Reedville Elementary's main building renovations and new annex; Glencoe High's multi-use turf field and lights; Hilhi's multi-use turf field, track and lights; new parent/bus dropoff areas at four elementary schools; and new play areas at five elementary schools. What happened at your school or building? What's coming? Find out at hillsboro-bond.org.

Changes Coming to High School Ticketed Events Entry Protocols

In our continual effort to ensure students are as safe as possible during high school sporting events and activities, changes are being made to our entrance protocols for all HSD ticketed events . Large bags and backpacks; outside food and beverages (empty water bottles ok); bikes, skateboards and scooters will no longer be allowed inside the venue. Unfortunately, there will be no storage available on site for prohibited items; however, there will be places to lock bikes and skateboards outside the venue. In addition, middle school and high school students must bring their valid school ID cards in order to enter the event. Additional details and more information about the new protocols will be shared in the coming weeks.

Budget and Citizens' Curriculum Advisory Committee Opportunities
HSD is currently accepting applications for the Budget Committee and the Citizens' Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC). To learn more about each opportunity, please visit our website. Application deadline is Sept. 4.
