The River Mile Mission Statement
To foster investigation and understanding of the Columbia River Watershed and to promote watershed health
The River Mile is…
…a network of educators, students, resource managers, scientists and environmental educators in the Columbia River Watershed sharing what they know and learn about the Columbia River Watershed and sharing best practices, lessons learned, examples of participation, links to resources and collecting and sharing real world scientific data. It is a participant driven approach to learning, researching and exploring the watershed health of the Columbia River.
Students and teachers are engaged in the practices of scientists and resource managers as they become intimately familiar with their outdoor classroom by spending time in the field inventorying, monitoring, analyzing, investigating and researching site discoveries.

Conference Overview
This first ever crayfish conference brings together scientists, wildlife managers, fisheries managers, educators and students interested in the status of crayfish throughout the North American continent.

There will be two tracks: science and research, and education. Education concurrent sessions will include lessons from the "Investigating Crayfish and Freshwater Ecosystems Teacher's Guide" as well as newly developed lessons yet to be released!

Join the Study and Contribute Valuable Data!
The River Mile Network has teamed up with the Universityof Illinois and the University of Washington scientists! Data from this project will help inform researchers about the species distribution throughout the Columbia River Watershed and beyond. This year they are asking for help locating and identifying crayfish. The project leaders are especially interested in locating and identifying species below Dry Falls in Eastern Washington AND in the Okanogan River region. They believe there is an undescribed species of crayfish in those places which have not been documented (geolocated and photographed for identification). You and your students may be the first to record new species of crayfish!
Data collection varies by state. Washington State is May through October 31st. Oregon is year-round. Anything you can do to help researchers will be of benefit!

Please join us at the 2019 Lake Roosevelt Forum Conference, November 19th-20th at the Davenport Hotel.
This is a unique opportunity for educators to network with natural resource managers while learning about local environmental and natural resource issues that can be woven into classroom activities. Topics of this year’s conference include eco-system function, salmon reintroduction, irrigation, renewable energy sources and invasive species.
NOTE: Students and educators should register through The River Mile, All other professionals should register through Lake Roosevelt Forum directly.

Credit and Clock Hours
Free STEM Clock Hours are available for Washington teachers and certificates of participation will be provided to all Oregon teachers. Idaho university professional development credit is also available. Contact us for more information.
