Annual Non-dinner Event

New Selection of Photo Cards 
Featuring Botanical Artwork
The Friends have a new selection of six photo cards from Blooms: An Illustrated History of the Ornamental Gardens at Ottawa's Central Experimental Farm and six new greeting cards featuring
botanical and
ornamental artwork. The botanical cards are from artists Faith Fyles and Arthur Kellett. The cards are $4 each or $20 for 6 and are only available to purchase at Bldg 72 Monday to Thursday from 9am to 2pm.

ORDC Open House and Bug Day
Saturday September 8 from 9am to 4pm
Friends of the Farm volunteers will assist AAFC scientists in greeting the public at the ORDC Open House on the Central Experimental Farm. This is a free educational event open to the public, all ages are welcome. View research displays, scientific instruments and materials, talk to scientists about their research, visit the Vascular Plant Collection, take a greenhouse tour or horse-drawn wagon ride, watch horse-drawn ploughing contests, speak with experts and view specimens from Canada's world famous National Collection of Insects, Arachnids and Nematodes, enjoy the specially planted wild pollinator garden and get tips for attracting them to your home garden, and see the beautifully restored Tropical Greenhouse.
Bug Day 2018 is also happening in the K.W. Neatby Building on the Central Experimental Farm. I

et tips on how to start your own bug collection, g
o on a bug collecting expedition, bet on your favourite to win in the always unpredictable cockroach races.
Visitors are encouraged to bring in interesting insects and let the knowledgeable team of bug experts identify them. The
Entomological Society of Ontario, the Ottawa Field-Naturalists' Club and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are sponsoring Bug Day 2018.
Parking is free in the lots around the Research Greenhouses and the Neatby Building.

and come and learn how and why to document trees to the family, genus, and species levels for scientific/conservation databases all while emphasizing technique in photography.

Join Roman Popadiouk and come and learn how these trees which were planted as part of the Shelterbelt project resist all kinds of extremes in their challenging environment. OHS-FCEF Joint Project Update
Celebrating the role of the Central Experimental Farm
In 2017 the Friends joined the
Ottawa Horticultural Society (OHS) in a special project to celebrate the
125th Anniversary of the OHS and the 150th Anniversary of Confederation. The project recognized the importance of hybridization in the development of plants for the Canadian climate and the critical role played by the Central Experimental Farm in promoting horticulture in the last hundred years and in creating ornamental plants so beloved by gardeners today.
 The Macoun Memorial Garden phase of the project was completed with an unveiling ceremony in June 2018. Using historical records, perennials favoured by Macoun were replanted in the north entrance to the garden, close to the Driveway, and a memorial plaque was installed. The Macoun Memorial Garden (in the Ornamental Gardens) was opened in 1936 to commemorate William T. Macoun, Dominion Horticulturist from 1910 until 1933, on the site of his former house. He was also President of the OHS in 1899. Scan the QR code on the memorial plaque for info.
 The Hybridization at the CEF phase of the project, completed in 2017, recognized significant achievements in hybridization, specifically the work of three hybridizers: Isabella Preston (lilacs), Felicitas Svejda (Explorer roses), and A.P. Saunders (peonies). Plaques recognizing the work of each of them, as well as the importance of hybridization in Canada, have been installed at the pergola in the Ornamental Garden at the Central Experimental Farm. Master Gardener Lectures
The tradition
expands with new fall lectures!
Every year the Friends partner with the
Master Gardeners of Ottawa Carleton to offer timely and informative presentations.
NEW this fall - two added lectures!
All presentations are from 7pm to 9pm in
Building 72 just east of the Prince of Wales roundabout with free parking. Lectures can be
