Upcoming Missoula Events!
September 8 - 14, 2019
Passed by Congress in 2010,  House Resolution 275  designates the week beginning with the second Sunday in September as  National Arts in Education Week . During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to tell the story of the impact of the transformative power of the arts in education.

  1. Celebrate. SPARK! Arts will be hosting an Arts in Ed Celebration on Saturday, September 14 from 9 - 1. Families will be able to stop in at multiple arts stops to participate in mini arts education activities. Students can pick up an "arts passport" at any of the arts stops. Students who participate in 5 or more of the art stops can enter into a raffle to win an amazing gift basket with lots of goodies from local arts organizations! More details below, or check out the event on Facebook!
  2. Advocate. Here in Missoula, SPARK! Arts will make a presentation to City Council on Monday, September 9 along with a proclamation from Mayor John Engen on the importance of Arts in Education. Following the presentation at City Council, SPARK! Arts will speak with the School Board on Tuesday, September 10.
  3. Participate. Share your story in the social media campaign, #BecauseOfArtsEd, to bring national visibility to the issue of arts education. Check in with SPARK! Arts on Facebook to see what some of our Teaching Artists have been able to do #BecauseOfArtsEd!

The 2019 celebration of National Arts in Education Week is dedicated to the memory of Ms. Carol Channing, whose advocacy efforts led to the creation of the national celebration in 2010.  Read the statement here

Basquiat in 35mm
World View - Global Cinema at The Roxy

Monday, September 9, 7 PM
The Roxy Theater
World View - Global Cinema at the Roxy
This fall, The Roxy Theater is proud to bring you WORLD VIEW: CULTURES ON DISPLAY - four films which highlight and celebrate the unifying power of the visual arts around the world. Hosted by Global and Cultural Affairs in ARTS Missoula and presented FREE OF CHARGE. Join us for the fall kick off event!

Despite living a life of extreme poverty in Brooklyn, graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) strives to rise up through the heady New York art scene of the 1970s and 1980s. He becomes the brightest star of neo-Expressionist painting and one of the most successful painters of his time, and even develops a friendship with Andy Warhol (David Bowie). But Basquiat's tumultuous life, specifically his addiction to heroin, overshadows and threatens his rise to fame.

BASQUIAT is sponsored by International Rescue Committee in Missoula . Series sponsored by Lake Missoula Tea Company , U.S. Bank , and Rideg Law.

Living Art of Montana

Living Art of Montana offers workshops for people who have cancer, an acute or chronic disease, are suffering the consequences of treatment, have a significant loss in their lives, and caregivers.

Fall Social Dance: Bachata

Tuesdays, 7:30 - 8:30 PM
September 10 - October 8
Downtown Dance Collective

Using simple side-to-side and forward-to-back stepping and sensual hip movements, the Bachata is a great dance for beginners and has almost replaced salsa and merengue in night clubs and on dance floors around the world. It’s all about sensuality and doesn’t use complicated turn patterns.

The Bachata is a dance from the Caribbean and Dominican Republic and began as a very basic dance. Essentially, this authentic style features a full 8-count,
dancing within a square, hence the side-to-side and forward-to-back footwork. Sensual hip movements and a closer embrace are par for this dance.

Are you ready for the heat?

Montana Book Festival

September 12 - 15, 2019

Join us this September to celebrate the joy of books! The Montana Book Festival strives to foster interest in literature for people of all ages, perpetuate a sense of literary community, and provide a vibrant, compelling forum for the literary arts that celebrates diversity.

For over thirty years, Missoula’s annual book festival has paid tribute to the tradition of writing in the West by bringing together authors from across the region.

In 2015, what was the Humanities Montana Festival of the Book became the Montana Book Festival thanks to the generosity of our fiscal sponsor, Arts Missoula. Since then, the Montana Book

Every year, local sponsors have come together to bring literary personalities such as James Lee Burke, Jane Smiley, Bill Kittredge, Charles D'Ambrosio, Gretel Ehrlich, Rick Bass and more to our mountain town. Along with an exciting array of readings, panels and exhibits, we annually host Pie & Whiskey, Erotic Fan Fiction, concerts and parties in downtown Missoula. Against the beautiful mountain backdrop, in a city split by the famous Clark Fork River, summer comes to a close and The Montana Book Festival comes to life.

The MT book fest has been a grassroots organization, relying on individual donations, grants, corporate sponsorships, a handful of dedicated locals and the enduring support of the Montana literary community to survive. We have worked to build upon the event's legacy while also reinvigorating the festival with new ideas and fresh perspective.

Art by Twinhome Prints. Screen-printed posters available for sale at the festival.

Pancake Breakfast (for Dinner)
Presented by Burns St Bistro

Saturday, September 14, 5 - 9 PM
Burns St Bistro

This June we were ecstatic to receive a $400,000 grant from the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust. $200,000 of the grant was an immediate donation to the ZACC Capital Campaign, and the other $200,000 is composed of matched funds. This means that we need to raise an additional $200K in order to unlock that half of the grant.

We have been working hard over the summer with our friends and allies to do just that, and they have been fantastic, but we need support from a greater portion of the Missoula community to tip our fundraising over the threshold required to meet this match.

In a push to help fulfill the Murdock grant, we have a final Capital Campaign event planned. We’re hosting a Pancake Breakfast for Dinner at Burns Street Bistro on Saturday, September 14, with live music by Worst Feelings Family Band featuring Special Guests, and color-your-own-breakfast for kids.

Tickets are $10 and include a full plate of pancakes with New Hampshire maple syrup, sausage links, fruit, and coffee (if desired). Morning-style drinks for purchase will include mimosas and red beer. There will also be a silent auction under the theme: ‘Yeah you’re full now, but what are you eating tomorrow morning?’, which will feature gift cards to local eateries who happen to serve breakfast and brunch, and other items to help you break the fast some other time.

All funds raised during the evening will go directly into the new ZACC Capital Campaign coffers, and will help us unlock the rest of the Murdock grant.

Lord of the Basses
Featuring Catalin Rotuaru, Double Bass

Sunday, September 15, 7:30 PM
UM Music Recital Hall

String Orchestra of the Rockies' sensational 35th season opens with the internationally acclaimed double bass phenomenon, Catalin Rotaru. Born in Romania, Catalin travels the world dazzling audiences with his one-of-a-kind virtuosity on the bass, and we are thrilled that he is coming to Missoula to make his SOR debut in his own arrangement of the Haydn C Major cello concerto and several short concert pieces by Giovanni Bottesini.

Our program opens with the melodic “Nocturne” of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, originally written as the slow movement of his double bass quintet, and we close our program with the “String Serenade” of Joseph Suk, a work inspired by Dvorak, who was his mentor and teacher. We hope to see you there as we start our 35th season of memorable music!

Charlotte's Web
Theatre for Young Audiences

September 12 - 13
Missoula Children's Theatre
Pictured above are Adelyn Helms as Charlotte and Griffin Hutchins as Wilbur. (Photo by Adam B. Ferguson.)
Charlotte’s Web, one of the most beloved stories in American children’s literature, will come to life on the stage of the MCT Center for the Performing Arts Sept 12-13. Produced by the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT), Charlotte’s Web is MCT’s annual Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) production. TYA is children’s theatre featuring professional adult actors.

In the show, we meet all of the enchanting Charlotte’s Web characters: Wilbur, the irresistible young pig who desperately wants to avoid the butcher; Fern, a girl who understands what animals say to each other; Templeton, the gluttonous rat who can occasionally be talked into a good deed; and the extraordinary spider, Charlotte, who proves to be “a true friend and a good writer.” Determined to save Wilbur, Charlotte begins her campaign with the “miracle” of her web in which she writes, “Some pig.” It’s the beginning of a victorious campaign which ultimately ends with the now-safe Wilbur doing what is most important to Charlotte.

While Charlotte’s Web is the story of an enduring friendship, it also reminds us that our own individuality and unique gifts are valuable and useful, whether you’re a spider or a pig or a rat or a person.

With cooperation from SPARK! Arts and the Missoula County Public Schools (MCPS), all MCPS second grade students will field trip to the MCT Center for the Performing Arts for a performance of Charlotte’s Web during Arts in Education Week. This is the 5 th year that MCT has been able to offer this theatre experience to the MCPS second graders.

*** Charlotte’s Web public performances are Thursday, Sept. 12 at 12:00 PM and Friday, Sept. 13 at 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM. All performances are at the MCT Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available at MCTinc.org; by calling 406-728-7529; or at MCT’s Box Office.

Fall/Winter Classes & Workshops at MCT!

The shorter days of fall mean more opportunities for young stars to shine brightly with the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT). With exciting productions and classes, MCT is where your children of all skill levels can explore their budding passion for theatre.

Rising Stars is specially crafted for grades K-2. Meeting Tues/Thur, Nov. 5-21, Rising Stars allows young performers to gain skills and confidence in a nurturing, fun atmosphere. Rising Stars will present an informal, non-ticketed performance on Thur, Nov. 21.

MCT’s innovative Play in a Day program is a day camp that occurs on most Missoula County Public Schools “no school days.” Within the course of one day, the K-8 performers will rehearse a small musical, which they then perform at 5:30PM. “I’m not Scared” (Oct. 17), “Monst-querade Ball” (Oct. 18), and “Dinosaurs” (Nov. 15) are this autumn’s Play in a Day performance themes.

Theatre Skills classes are for young performers ready for more in-depth work. Theatre Skills Classes will meet Sat mornings for six weeks, 10AM-12PM, Oct. 12-Nov. 16. Open to K-12, but divided into K-2, 3-6, and 7-12 classes, the fall session will focus on developing acting skills. Theatre Skills Classes will also be offered in Apr-May of 2020.

The falling temperatures of December will bring the magic of Disney’s Frozen Jr.! These classes, open to grades 7-12, run Dec. 3-Feb. 8, with performances Feb. 6-8, 2020.
