Hello Daves Avenue Families,
Halloween Scavenger Hunts and Red Ribbon Week activities have contributed to another exciting week at Daves. Thank you to Mrs. Stephani Regalia for leading the way with Red Ribbon Week and CASA activities. Also, thank you to Michele Pullens, Nicole Reginelli, and all of the parent volunteers who helped to make the scavenger hunts a reality. Today, we celebrate Unity Day—for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. Students and staff are wearing orange and with the support of our ABC Readers and Project Cornerstone, we remain committed to helping students learn how to be UPstanders when dealing with peer-to-peer relationships. The school-based lessons emphasize the importance of positive self-talk to ultimately boost personal power. Our goal is to empower students to discuss friendship challenges with caring adults, including teachers and parents. Together, we can help students build a virtual toolbox where all students are better equipped to navigate daily interactions. In closing, I’m sending you a Cool Cat thumbs-up for helping promote our PAWS (peaceful, aware, wise, & safe) on campus and in the community.

Red Ribbon Week continues!
It is a national campaign that promotes healthy lifestyle choices in youth. The foundation for a healthy lifestyle starts in elementary school with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and positive self esteem. In celebration of Red
Ribbon Week and healthy choices, the Daves Avenue Student Council has chosen the following spirit wear and activities:
Thursday, 10/24: "Be Thankful Thursday"
- FunVisors will have a "gratitude box" set up at a table for kids to write things they are thankful for.
Friday, 10/25: "Fearless Friday"
- "Dream Big" poster set up at FunVisor table where kids can write a dream they have, a fear to conquer...
In addition, the following vendors are supporting our students.
-
Pizza My Heart Los Gatos:
A free slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza.
-
Vitality Bowls:
$1 off a smoothie and $2 off a bowl.
-
Juice Co LG:
10% off any juice.

Red Ribbon Week at Daves Avenue is sponsored by CASA. CASA helps parents and youth foster healthy lifestyles through the following programs:

FROM MRS. G...
Book fair starting at Halloween? Really!? YES! So no one forgets it will be here! :)
Mrs. G’s book fair thinking: I want everyone to have all sorts of exciting books to read… all the time! You can also say “please add this to the library!"
For those new to it, book fair is like having a
book store land
(for just over a week)
INSIDE the library
. The
BEST
children’s bookstore in the nation, (Pannell Award winner for 2019!)
Hicklebee’s
of San Jose, sends our fair. So selection is deep, which helps both voracious and choosy readers.
Also unusual to our fair: hours are long (8-6 pm for all of conference week, plus the Friday before, plus Halloween this year, plus until 9pm the evening of 11/6). Why are the hours so long? So more people have more chances to come! I will be there whenever the fair is open, because the BEST part of it (as your librarian) is getting to visit with EVERYONE!
Please come tell me about your reader, especially at a less busy time (usually after 1 pm), and
I will help you find books for them!
Do I care if they’re library books or book fair books?? Not at all! Hearing from readers (and their parents) is my favorite part of the fair. It's a visiting and listening opportunity!
25% of proceeds (a quarter from each dollar) comes back to the library, and that funds almost all of our new book purchases year after year.
THANK YOU! Thank you also for your stupendous students!
Cash, Check and Credit Card
are accepted!
Questions? Contact
Mrs. G.
See you at the fair!

The new Wimpy Kid (Wrecking Ball) will be at the fair at 8 am Tuesday 11/5.
For pre-orders, I will have the books tagged to hand off before the first bell!

On 10/15, for the first time ever, Daves Avenue Elementary School was represented in the
County Middle School Cross Country Championships.
This dedicated group of 5th-grade runners included Alec Goddard, Alex Halsey, Ethan Kail, Tyson Vaughn-Baker, Christian Martinez, and Louisa Horwath (who competed in the 6th Grade Boys Division) and the team came in 5th overall out of all the Middle Schools competing!
This team, part of the Cheetahs Running Club, joins the previous Daves Ave Cheetah Alums that have actually won the Championships. We want to keep this tradition going and continually produce great teams for Fisher Middle School, but we are very thin in 5th Grade Girls who would form the 2020 6th Grade Girls. To that end, for the rest of the school year,
we will prioritize 5th Grade girls over any other group to make up the numbers.
If your 5th Grade athletically inclined daughter would like to be part of this incredible program, please register on the waitlist

This month, Asset Building Champion (ABC) readers in grades 1-5 read the book
My Secret Bully,
by Trudy Ludwig.
In the book, Monica experiences bullying from her longtime friend, Katie. Relational aggression, also called emotional bullying, is a common type of bullying that can take the form of gossip, rumors, social exclusion, humiliation, manipulation, put-downs, and negative body language such as turning away, ignoring, crossing arms and making faces. Contrary to common belief, it affects boys as well as girls.
Suffering from stomach aches and social isolation, Monica receives the loving support of her mom, who listens and encourages her to
stand up for herself without becoming a bucket dipper in return
. Monica also demonstrates
positive self-talk
and
resiliency
when she chooses to focus on new friends who treat her with kindness and respect.
Our Daves Ave Cool Cats are discussing qualities that make a good friend. We are identifying
Friendship Boosters
in ourselves and others. We continue to practice being
UPstanders
and know when to get help from a caring adult at school and at home. We are very proud of our students for demonstrating positive friendship skills including empathy, kindness and inclusion.
