Dear Friend:

During the past few weeks, I have been pleased to announce several capital grants to local public libraries including Harrison, North Castle, Tuckahoe, and Yonkers. Read more about these grants and how the libraries are using them in the section below.

Road improvements are critical to the economic vibrancy of our county. In the past week, there have been several substantial announcements regarding road improvements taking place in the 37th district. The "Last Mile" project on I-95 has begun under the direction of the NYS Thruway Authority, and a $5.1 million road resurfacing project directed by the State Department of Transportation is also underway. Read more about each of these projects in the section below.

This week, Governor Andrew Cuomo took a stand against a federal rule change which would allow schools to use federal funding to purchase firearms even though Congress expressly did not permit it in related legislation. I commend the Governor for  his letter to New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia on this subject.

As always, if there is a concern you think my office can help you with, please don't hesitate to call us at 914-934-5250.

Warm regards,

CONSTRUCTION GRANTS AWARDED TO
LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARIES

This past month, I've been pleased to announce several state grants awarded to public libraries in the district for capital construction. These grants are awarded from $24 million in capital funds for public libraries through the 2017-18 State Aid for Library Construction Program.
  • Harrison Public Library: $37,000 to support the construction of an outdoor reading and children's activities space.
  • North Castle Public Library: $135,000 to create new and expanded areas for children and adults while also creating space for an art gallery.
  • Tuckahoe Public Library: $22,000 to replace aged windows with energy efficient windows.
  • Yonkers Public Library, Grinton I. Will Branch: $235,000 to update the building's facade, replace windows, and improve insulation to increase energy-efficiency .
Public libraries are the centerpieces of our communities in Westchester and throughout the state, and I will continue to work hard to advocate for additional funding and resources for them.

STATE FUNDING TO
IMPROVE OUR ROADS AND HIGHWAYS

Improving local roads and infrastructure is one of my priorities as your State Senator. In the last week, I've been proud to announce the commencement of multiple projects to improve our roads and highways.

The $135 million "Last Mile" Project on I-95 will reconstruct roadways, improve safety, and alleviate noise pollution on the last mile of I-95 before the Connecticut border. Read more about the details of this project here. Though the work the NYS Thruway Authority is performing is important, I recognize that the traffic and noise disruptions may cause challenges for local community members. If you have any questions or concerns while this project is ongoing, please don't hesitate to call my office at 914-934-5250.

The NYS Department of Transportation has also started work resurfacing 5 miles of roadway on Route 22 and Yonkers Avenue. Both roads will have their existing pavement milled and replaced with 1.5 inches of asphalt. This work will provide for smoother and safer roads conditions.

TAKING A STAND AGAINST NEW FEDERAL
RULES TO ALLOW FUNDING FOR GUNS IN SCHOOLS

Governor Andrew Cuomo wrote  a letter to New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia expressing his strong opposition to a new federal proposal which would allow local schools districts to use federal funding to purchase firearms for teachers and administrators.

I commend the Governor for taking a stand against this proposal. I am a sponsor of  S.7874/A.10011 which would bar school teachers and other school personnel from carrying firearms on schools grounds unless they are a school resource officer, law enforcement officer, or security guard.

I am proud to say that S.7874 has the support of the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence, and the Million Mom March/Brady Campaign Westchester Chapter.  Read more about the bill here.

37th DISTRICT NEWS

Last week,  lifelong Port Chester resident Jean Vita Camillo turned 107 years old! I went to the Enclave Nursing Home to wish her a big happy birthday. Jean grew up in Port Chester in a large Italian-American family as one of 9 children. Her brother Joseph Carlucci became the first Italian-American Mayor of Port Chester in 1948.

Had a wonderful time with County Legislator Damon Maher and Deborah Levy Maher at the 44th Annual Westchester Jewish Music and Arts Festival at Kensico Dam! It was a fun-filled day for the whole family with music, dancing, food, face painting and exhibitions.

Great meeting with Denise Miranda and Rebecca Mudie of the NYS Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. We spoke about their priorities and their commitment to collaboration, education and reporting to ensure the safety of some of New York's most vulnerable residents.

On Tuesday, August 21st, I had a wonderful time meeting with leaders of the Antioch Baptist Church in Bedford Hills. We had an engaging conversation about work we can do to increase civic engagement among diverse communities.

This week, I was glad to attend the Westchester Institute for Human Development's celebration unveiling the new Mobile Dental Clinic serving children and adults with disabilities throughout the region.
