GSC Faculty E-News for October 2019
Teaching and Learning for a Quality Education

Many of us have come into teaching with an ingrained thirst for knowledge. This yearning for knowledge is what helps make good teachers great! As educators, we understand that in order to educate our students, we must continue to build our own knowledge and understanding. Being open to new experiences and learning opportunities helps to enhance our teaching practice.

At GSC, we want to be sure that we are providing the best opportunities for our faculty to grow. This fall we are excited to share the following faculty development opportunities·

  • Through the Academic Technology Institute (ATI) Keene State College will be hosting the Promoting Student Agency to Improve Teaching & Learning Webinar on Thursday, October 24th from 7:00pm-8:30pm. Learn more online at https://faculty.granite.edu/index.php/faculty-training-development/.
  • GSC’s Office of Academic Affairs has arranged for faculty to observe select conference sessions streamed live from the Online Learning Consortium’s conference on Friday November 22nd from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at our Concord campus. This is a chance to virtually attend the OLC conference session – free of charge -and connect with faculty and staff from the College. Light refreshments will be provided. Register online at https://granitestatecollege.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0JrH6aJKLUBTzwN.

Over the next year we will continue to provide opportunities for faculty development both online and on campus. We hope that you find them useful in your own teaching practices. If you have ideas for future sessions we encourage you to share them here!

Thank you for all you do for GSC and our students!
With regards,

Dr. Scott Stanley, Provost & Vice President of Academic Affairs

Collegial Guest Lectures

Being responsive to learner questions and creating connections and dynamic interactions for students is a hallmark of academic engagement at Granite State College, and we’re proud to share a recent example from one of our newer faculty members, Siddartha Sosa Rodriguez who joined us in the winter 2019 term and teaches in the Human Services and Public Safety Academic Center.

Left to right - Dr. Danilo Been and
GSC faculty member Siddartha Sosa Rodriguez

During the first few semesters teaching PSY502, Siddartha heard a common question from students: what is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist? To bring the answer to that question to life, Siddartha tapped in to his one of his trusted colleagues and invited Dr. Danilo Been from Yale School of Medicine to the first day of the PSY502 class. The dynamic and interactive lecture called Psychiatrist vs Psychologist, Who is Who and Who Does What? was intended to answer questions that Siddartha gets during his classes such as: What is each of them responsible for and how to achieve a degree respectively?

Dr. Been is a Psychiatrist with 20 years of medical experience and a sub-specialty training in addiction Psychiatry from Yale School of Medicine, and he shared the steps he took to become a Psychiatrist. In parallel, Siddartha shared a glimpse of his own journey through the psychology pathway.

The students’ interactions with both subject matter experts allowed them to explore the differences and similarities of the professions from a practical standpoint. In addition, the value and critical importance of inter-professional collaboration was highlighted by the collaborative dialog during the class.

What's New in the Center for Liberal Arts?
Sarah Batterson
Liberal Arts Center Director

I am currently teaching a newly revised HIS610 Research Methods course and developing IDIS601, the new interdisciplinary seminar, for winter term.

It is entitled “Life and Death” and will focus on the history of epidemics in the United States from biological, social, and cultural perspectives.

After being piloted, this multi-sectioned seminar will examine a variety of interdisciplinary topics, based on the individual instructor’s expertise, and will offer faculty members an opportunity for team teaching. I’ve enjoyed being a part of the course’s initial planning and am looking forward to seeing this course fully developed.
An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.
