NOMINATE AN ENVIRONMENTAL HERO!
|
The Maryland League of Conservation Voters Education Fund has created the annual President Theodore Roosevelt Award in recognition of the individual, group or organization whom through a specific action, event or body of work will leave a positive conservation legacy that mirrors the ethos of President Theodore R. Roosevelt.
Awardees will be recognized at the annual Maryland League of Conservation Voters/Maryland League of Conservation Voters Education Fund Environmental Leadership dinner on October 24 in Annapolis.
Nominations are due by Sept. 30. More info

SM PROJECT ASSISTANTS CREATE SUSTAINABILITY RESOURCE PAGES FOR TWO TOWNS

In our earlier June 2019 newsletter, Sustainable Maryland offered to help towns with populations of less than 10,000 to build an online Sustainability Resource Center.
Two UMD students, Galina Koroleva and Emma Lipsky, have created online Sustainability Resource Centers for the towns of Barnesville and Landover Hills, with potential plans to create hardcopy brochures as well. These website pages were created with Wix, which can easily be linked to an already established website. The UMD students and the respective towns worked closely together over the summer to incorporate desired resources and information on these web pages.
These resource centers highlighted each town's respective sustainability accomplishments and goals, as well as other county, state and non-profit resources, and will count for 5 points on each town's future Sustainable Maryland certification application.

WELCOME ABOARD TOWN OF NORTH CHEVY CHASE!

 SM staff are pleased to announce that the Village of North Chevy Chase (Montgomery County) is our 76th SM-registered community, bringing us very close to 50% of all of Maryland's municipalities being engaged with the program!
The village recently formed an Environment Committee/Green Team, which posts a regular "Sustainable Living" article on different topics in each month's municipal newsletter. The village is also working on completing a tree inventory. We look forward to working with North Chevy Chase!

engage diverse stakeholders, reduce contention and garner support for sustainability initiatives.

The most recent IPCC report brings the news that humanity faces dire consequences if emissions are not drastically reduced by 40% in the next decade. Cities have a unique role to play, as they are responsible for land use, transportation systems, and the attributes of buildings. While energy efficiency is often the first and most critical step in any local climate strategy - often the cheapest and most cost-effective form of clean energy - the extent to which cities can implement wide-sweeping energy efficiency policies varies due to different baseline knowledge, resource capacities and available funding.
This year's workshop topic,
MUNICIPAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY: MEETING THE CLIMATE DEADLINE, will help communities i
dentify and begin to
develop and implement energy efficiency policies that will equitably reduce city-wide energy
consumption to meet their own climate mitigation and resilience goals. The workshop will incorporate examples, stories and tools that will
help communities to become more energy efficient, save money, decrease carbon pollution and fight climate change.
As more and more cities get serious about climate action planning, energy efficiency is at the forefront, both nationally and at the state level. Learn about the benefits of energy efficiency; the
policies and practices that can help reduce costs;
funding sources and technical assistance available for increasing efficiency of municipal operations; and examples of how to engage residents and to lead communities through this vital transformation for our collective future.

SM'S KELLY PEAKS GRADUATES FROM CHESAPEAKE CONSERVATION CORPS PROGRAM

Congrats to Kelly Peaks, our 2018/2019
Chesapeake Conservation Corps member, who graduated from the program last month. Kelly worked on a wide range of SM and EFC projects this past year, has been instrumental in teeing up SM's impending New Actions and New Certification Tier (stayed tuned!), and was simply a great pleasure to have as a colleague!
CCC members are funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust and assigned to host agencies across the state each year. SM has been fortunate to receive several of these full time post-grads for a year's commitment with our organization. We are grateful for the added capacity these young people add to our work. Click
