Installation of Matt Gaventa May 7
Mission Presbytery will hold a service of installation for the Reverend Matt Gaventa as Senior Pastor to University Presbyterian Church Austin at 3;00 p.m., Sunday, May 7, in the UPC sanctuary.

A reception will follow in the UPC Great Hall.  All are welcome to this momentous service.
A Conversation on Immigration

As a follow on to our three-part series, “Welcoming the Stranger” last February, the Social Witness Committee invites you to participate in a deliberative dialogue on the topic of immigration. Bee Moorhead, Texas Impact executive director and a UPC member, will facilitate a panel discussion with experts on the topic; however, most of the meeting will be focused on table discussions with you—the members of UPC. 
 
We want to know what you think about this topic. Are there actions we could or should take as individuals or as a church community? Your conclusions will be incorporated into the Social Witness Committee’s immigration report to Session.

A Note from Matt

I’ve only been here for about a month, but it doesn’t take long to realize that a lot of things happen at UPC during the week. Between outreach programs, outside groups, church committees and programs, and getting ready for Sunday morning, there’s a lot of administration and support that goes into making this place run!


As you know, Jan is our only full-time, non-pastor employee, and currently balances all of her office management work with handling most of the phone calls and foot traffic that come into the building. But a few extra hands during the week would free her up to work on Sunday bulletins and manage church communications more efficiently. 

So, we are looking for more Office Angels — a few friendly faces who could answer the phone, greet people at the door, and get a feel for the church office during the week. In particular, we’d like to find a few friendly faces to help on Mondays and Thursdays in morning or afternoon shifts. 

This is a great and easy chance to get to know a different side of the life of the church! If you think you might be interested, email the church office or call 512-476-5321 to learn a bit more about the opportunities available.

Our Financial Manager Sandie McGee retires this week after 10 years of faithful service to UPC. Sandie's last day in the office is April 18, after which she's on her way east for awhile. If you would like to show your appreciation for Sandie’s ministry, please know that UPC is collecting a love offering in her honor. You may drop a check in the offering plate, mail one to the church office, or make a contribution online through myUPC. Select the General Fund and note in the memo line that the contribution is for Sandie's love offering.

An Invitation from the Present Word Class
Please join The Present Word class on Sunday, May 7, at 9:30 a.m., when class member Dr. William Martin will make a special presentation on his most recent paper. Entitled "Consuming the Earth so that There Is No Place Left to Live: Illustrating Isaiah's Contribution to the Ethos of Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship," Dr. Martin's paper will be presented at the international meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature in Berlin next October.

UPLift Needs Next Week
Every Tuesday morning, UPC volunteers provide some food and coffee, hygiene items, and occasional financial assistance for our clients. While all donations are welcome at any time, here are some items to consider bringing to worship this week.

This concert will feature works by Tormis, Poulenc, Chilcott and more, including a world premiere of a new work by one of our Artisitic Directors, Curtis White. Prayers of Thanksgiving

We welcome into the UPC family Elizabeth Anne Given s, born to Emily and Travis Givens on April 11. Elizabeth Anne arrived a few weeks early, so will remain in the NICU a while until she grows a bit. Thank you for your prayers in this tender and joyful time.
 
Please pray for 
 
Jared Evans, retired Air Force, who is working on a helicopter base 78 miles from Kabul.  Communication to his family was not possible for 48 hours after the MOAB bomb was dropped near the base. Thanks for prayers for him and his unit.  Cousin of Karen Miller.
