                         August 31, 2018

Season:  Ordinary Time                             emuc.ca

                        Rev. Kathi's Message:

One more weekend of summer vacation until school starts. For those about to start a new school year there is the sense of squeezing fun out of every moment left and also of getting back up to speed, of fitting back into a routine. For those of us not going back, the heart still tugs. Sometimes it seems that no matter how long ago it was that you left school, the last week of summer vacation is quite bittersweet.

I am thinking today of all of you and send this prayer for a new school year:

Wonderful God, you are the source of all wisdom and knowledge. You have given us the desire to learn and grow, and hearts to share our learning.
  • Bless our children as they begin yet another year of school. Give them peace when they feel nervous, focus when they feel distracted, energy when they feel tired. Open their minds to the lessons they will learn both in and outside the classroom. Help them to make friends that build one another up and be friends to those who need them. Be ever-present with them in the classroom, on the school bus, on the playground, and at home, and may they feel your loving care in all they do.
  • Walk with our teens as they navigate their middle and high school years. Guide them in making good choices as they grow in wisdom and maturity. May they be assured of your unconditional love for each one.
  • For those taking on the burden and privilege of higher education, whether as young adults or as mature students, please send balance. That these learners will focus on their classwork, projects, labs and tutorials and will also take time to build relationships and embrace opportunities to become the unique human beings you have created them to be.
  • Bless those in the ministry of teaching future generations. As they embark on a new school year, grant them energy, passion, discipline, and endurance for their daily tasks. Infuse their classrooms and lecture halls with an atmosphere of care and mutual respect, that all interactions there will be bathed in patience and understanding. Help their lessons to grow pupils in both knowledge and character and help us all to support the work these teachers do building up our community and our future.
  • There are many others who are involved in education, and we ask a blessing on the school administrators, librarians, education assistants, custodians, lunch supervisors and bus drivers. May all their interactions with the students and each other be kind and compassionate. May they experience the joy and honour of helping to shape lives.

Help us to look upon every child in our community as one of our own, helping them to grow in character and knowledge. Amen.

Northwest Mississauga Constituent Group Refugee Status Update
Both Tarek and the Nadaff family are gradually settling into their new homes in Mississauga. Through a Syrian community organization, Tarek has enrolled in a Social Integration course at the downtown campus of the University of Toronto. Both he and Nadeem have had their credentials assessed and are attending workshops to help them with their job searches. Nadeem will take part in a coop program that will help him to gain Canadian work experience. Both are anxious to start work and use their skills. Oulla is enrolled in English classes and is becoming much more confident speaking. Five year old Lelas is looking forward to starting kindergarten in September. In spite of the hot weather we have been experiencing, they are all anxious about the approach of winter.
Tarek and the Nadaffs have been grateful for all of the generous support and donations and are not in need of anything in particular at this time. If you would like to help in any way, please speak to a member of the sponsorship group:
Hermine Bingham, Muriel Hamdani, Debby Sturgeon, Janet Morrison

Meet and Greet:  Sunday September 16 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the lower Hall at Erin Mills United Church. Please join the Northwest Missisauga Constituent group to meet the Nadaff family and Tarek Youzbashi and welcome them to Canada.
