Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother-of-God
On Saturday, September 8, the worldwide Armenian Church will celebrate the Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother-of-God.
St. Mary was born to Joachim and Anna, a devout couple whose earnest prayers for a child were answered with the birth of a daughter. Mary's birth is not recorded in the Gospel, but in all likelihood it occurred in Bethlehem or Nazareth, some 20 years before Christ's nativity.
Her life of holiness and purity, and her graceful acceptance of the role to which God called her, as the mother of Jesus Christ, all make Mary one of the pre-eminent exemplars of the Christian faith, whose birth and very conception are occasions for celebration in the church.
The Armenian Church has celebrated the Feast of the Nativity of the Holy Mother-of-God since the 13th century. St. Mary is known in the Armenian Church as Asdvadzamayr-Asdvadzadzin, the "Mother of God" and the "Bearer of God"-a position doctrinally established at the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in the 5th century.

Shining a Light on the Plight of Persecuted Christians
Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the Diocesan Legate and Ecumenical Director, will lead a panel of experts in Washington, DC, later this month, in an examination of the ongoing plight of Christians in the Middle East.
"Addressing the persecution of Christians and religious minorities in the Middle East is more important today than ever before," explained Archbishop Aykazian, who will moderate the panel comprised of his fellow leaders in the ecumenical community.
These include James Winkler of the National Council of Churches; Rev. Dr. Susan Henry-Crowe of the United Methodist Church; Kent Hill of the Religious Freedom Institute; and Shaun Casey of Georgetown University and the Berkley Center.
"Having worked and traveled with the panelists on earlier occasions, I know their firsthand knowledge of interacting directly with people who are victimized on a daily basis due to their Christian faith," said Archbishop Aykazian, who is a former president of the NCC, is a founding leader of Christian Churches Together, and served on the Presidential Advisory Committee on Faith-Based Initiatives.
The panel discussion titled "Christians At-Risk in the Middle East" will be part of the National Advocacy Conference of the Armenian Assembly of America, meeting in Washington, DC, on September 24.

Whet Your Appetite for the Met Museum's "Armenia!" Exhibit
A few weeks still remain before the much-anticipated "Armenia!" exhibit opens in New York City. But for those who can't wait to see it, a "preview" has launched on the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website.
This online exhibit gives viewers a taste of rare works of Armenian art from around the world that will be on display during the run of the exhibit, from September 22, 2018, through January 13, 2019. Many of them have never before shown in the United States.
Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan and the Eastern Diocese have taken active roles in the exhibit. One of the exceptional items on display will be a 17th-century Voskan Bible that the Diocese is lending to the Met for this special occasion.
Fr. Findikyan has also contributed an essay to the magnificent exhibit catalogue.
The online exhibit includes photos and background on select objects of art, videos, and an interactive map of the medieval Armenian world.

FAR Supports Families of the Fallen
Life has been difficult for Elvira Tovmasyan since she lost her husband, Masis. She can hardly hold back the tears when she talks about the last time she heard his voice.
"I clearly remember that day. I called my husband but he wouldn't pick up the phone. He texted me back, assuring me that everything was okay and there was no need to worry. But by the time I called him early the next morning, he was already unreachable," she recalled.
Masis died during the shelling of Yeghnikner, in Nagorno-Karabagh's Martuni region. Elivira is one of many widows left behind in the wake of the "Four-Day War" of April 2016. Those days of violence also left many children fatherless-and left their families with no source of livelihood or security.
But in 2017, with generous support from the Knights of Vartan fraternal organization, the Fund for Armenian Relief expanded its "Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program" (CASP) to begin providing financial aid to children who had lost their fathers in this war. So far, 62 children from throughout Artsakh have received annual financial aid-including the children of Elvira and the late Masis Tovmasyan: Edvin (age 12) and Elen (age 10).

31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. 32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. 33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. 36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; 37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
Mark 7.31-37
