VDL crowns Homecoming Queen, and Friday night lights just got brighter
|
Vista del Lago students voted Emma Wong as their Homecoming Queen, and it was a schoolwide celebration. As a student in the school's Inclusion class, Emma is known about campus for saying hello to everyone she meets.
According to her teacher, Elizabeth Sutami, Emma knows how to break the ice with people, and has become an ambassador on campus for bridging awareness and understanding.
"Sometimes people just don't know what to do or say when interacting with someone with special needs" says Emma's teacher, Elizabeth Sutami. "Emma has helped teach others that special needs students are just students, and just want to belong."
Homecoming celebrations included a parade through neighborhood streets on Wednesday, and then a football game on Friday night. Her date for both events, Nick Wall, was overjoyed when her name was announced. "During the parade we played her favorite song
Party in the USA
on loop where she danced, waved and laughed," Wall said. Later in the week, at the football game, when she was announced as queen, the whole crowd roared with excitement.

"Vista has been a wonderfully inclusive campus." said her mom, Jen. "Students with disabilities can and want to be active contributing members of their community. She loves just hanging out with her friends and chatting about what they're going to do that weekend, you know, just being a typical teenager."

IN THE NEWS: Heroes honored for saving Cordova High student's life
|
The Folsom Cordova Unified School District Board of Education on Thursday, Sept. 26 honored the Cordova High School staff, nurses, and regional first-responders who recently saved the life of a tenth-grade student.
On the morning of Aug. 29, Cordova High School sophomore Sunn Carson collapsed during class. School nurses and the Rancho Cordova Police Officer assigned to the campus immediately began CPR, but the student was unresponsive as Sacramento Metro Regional Fire crews rushed him to the UC Davis Medical Center.
After his stunning recovery during several days in the hospital, it was learned that Sunn had a previously undetected medical condition. Doctors believe he would not be alive today had it not been for the heroics of Cordova High's first responders.
In the news: Multiple news stations covered the Board recognition.

Reminder: Second Folsom attendance boundaries workshop tonight
|
When: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3
Where: Folsom Middle School multipurpose room (500 Blue Ravine Rd.)
Will the District provide revised attendance boundary scenarios?
Yes. Revised scenarios involving Blanche Sprentz and Folsom Hills elementary schools will be presented for additional feedback during tonight's workshop.
Based on the feedback and analysis to date, scenarios that previously included Oak Chan and Gold Ridge elementaries are no longer under consideration by District staff.
What will the format of tonight's workshop be?
During the workshop, staff will present several scenarios involving Blanche Sprentz and Folsom Hills elementary schools. Middle school and high school enrollment projections will be provided for each scenario considering a variety of factors, including:
- Impact of capacity projections when comparing various middle-to-high school feeder patterns, including scenarios that keep cohorts of students together from middle to high school and scenarios that do not
- Review of the public's proposals for phased-in implementation (or "grandfathering") and potential impacts to capacity projections
- Time throughout the evening for Q&A, feedback, and idea-sharing
Where can I see the feedback that was collected so far?
Answers to questions that were submitted on notecards during the Sept. 19 forum will be posted to our
boundaries website
in the near future.

Cordova High Fall Theatre Production: Puffs
|
The Cordova High fall play production of Puffs is coming Oct. 10-13 at the Performing Arts Center.
For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.
This rendition tackles Hogwarts from the perspective of its least celebrated house, Hufflepuff, long considered the home of leftover students who weren't brave, smart, or ruthless enough to earn spots in the other school-sanctioned cliques.
The Sunday October 13 show is a special time (5 p.m.) and price ($15) and includes the show, plus a dessert buffet with the cast after. The buffet is catered by CHS culinary.
Show times:
Thursday, Oct. 10, 7 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 12, 2 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 13, 5 p.m. - $15 tickets for this showing

Kinney High students working hard and giving back to the community
On a recent field trip to Sloughhouse's Davis Ranch Kinney High students spent the day learning about farming and teamwork and giving back to their community.
They participated in the Helping Hands program which collaborates with other organizations that enable the farm to send surplus produce to local area food banks.
Students spent the afternoon picking fruits and vegetables and were rewarded for their hard work by taking a box of vegetables home.
