As a nation, we rely on our vast agriculture system for food and economic security. To maintain a robust production, access to abundant water resources is required. Periods of extreme drought, such as those experienced in recent years, have a significant impact on the agriculture industry that extend to many segments of our national economy. 

Through the use of research, monitoring, and management, the impact of droughts can be mitigated. Initiatives  such as the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) work with communities and governments to improve their preparedness resources and information networks. In their efforts, NIDIS has found that the application of research to operational capabilities helps improve the ability to monitor current drought conditions and better predict its onset.

An estimated 1 in 5 Americans live with a disability and have a desire to contribute to their local community, as well as economy through employment opportunities. In spite of legislative strides such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other state level laws, many people with disabilities face barriers to employment and self-sufficient lifestyles placing them at a disproportionately higher risk for poverty and economic insecurity. While many policies have assisted in addressing this challenge, to provide a more systematic approach state level policies will need to focus on a number of key areas.
