Republicans try to revive health-care effort as leaders seek to temper expectations

Republicans led by Vice President Pence pushed to revive a moribund health-care bill on Tuesday, meeting late into the night with key lawmakers eager to build new GOP consensus to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Pence spent much of Tuesday on Capitol Hill meeting with key groups of lawmakers, as well as with House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.), a day after visiting separately with conservative hard-
liners and moderates to gauge the potential for a revamped version of legislation that collapsed last month.

The crux of the new proposal would be to allow states to seek exemptions from certain mandates established under the Affordable Care Act — including a requirement that insurers cover 10 “essential health benefits” as well as a prohibition on charging those with preexisting medical conditions more than the healthy.

Methadone Accounted for 23% of Opioid OD Deaths in 2014

CDC report: Higher use of the prescription drug found among Medicaid population

Methadone-related overdoses accounted for nearly one in four deaths related to prescription opioids in 2014, despite a recent decline in drug overdose deaths involving methadone, said researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Overall, the rate of methadone-overdose deaths increased 600% from 1999 to 2006 (from 0.3 persons per 100,000 to 1.8 per 100,000) before declining to 1.1 per 100,000 in 2014, reported Mark Faul, PhD, and colleagues. While the drug accounted for only 1% of all opioid prescriptions, methadone-related deaths were responsible for 22.9% of opioid-related deaths in 2014, the authors wrote in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report,

Is Anthem Exiting the Obamacare Exchanges? The Trump Administration Needs to Decide if They Are In or Out

Bloomberg is out with a report that Anthem may exit most of their Obamacare exchange markets next year:

Anthem, Inc. is likely to pull back from Obamacare’s individual insurance markets in a big way for next year, according to a report from analysts who said they met with the company, a move that could limit coverage options for consumers at a politically crucial time for the law. Anthem “is leaning toward exiting a high percentage of the 144 rating regions in which it currently participates,” Jefferies analysts David Windley and David Styblo said Thursday in a research note. An exit by Anthem might be devastating to insurance markets created by the Affordable Care Act, which is often called Obamacare.

The company, which sells coverage under the Blue Cross and Blue Shield brand in 14 states, is one of the few big insurers that has stuck with the ACA. UnitedHealth Group Inc. and Aetna Inc. have already exited most states, and Humana Inc. is planning to stop offering individual ACA plans entirely for 2018.
