Action Alert: Make Your Voice Heard on Two Key Issues
Mental Health Housing and Paid Family Leave

We want to remind our readers that we have an opportunity to make our voices heard on two key issues.

Paid Family Leave: This is an issue of great importance to caretakers of those with chronic health issues (such as mental illness). For years, we have heard stories of all families have had to sacrifice losing jobs and income in order to be there when a loved one experienced a time of crisis. Paid Family Leave protects workers and allows them to focus on caring for their loved one when they were needed most.

A few weeks ago, we informed you of a new study being conducted at Columbia University that is recruiting people to detail how Paid Family Leave impacts them. Click here to read our action alert on the study. Click here to learn more about the study and click here to take the eligibility quiz.

Mental Health Housing: Mental Health Housing has long been NAMI-NYS's leading advocacy issue. Our colleagues at the Bring it Home campaign are currently looking for people to share their stories on how mental health housing has helped either their recovery or the recovery of a loved one. To learn more about this opportunity, please email Doug Cooper.

If your story can help advance these two important causes, than we encourage you to participate. Hope starts with you!!!

Local Business Owner in Rochester
Giving Back to Mental Health and NAMI Rochester

Brian Mueller, the new owner of Cam's Pizzeria in Rochester, who has lived with various mental health issues since he was a child, has dedicated himself and his business to supporting mental health causes including NAMI Rochester, as NAMI has helped him in his recovery. He is trying to raise $10,000. "It's important to me to support projects that are funded by donations that are important for the community and the mental health community," says Mueller.

NAMI Rochester's Kristina Mossgraber said of Mueller's efforts, "I find it very moving, having to have been in that situation myself, I find a comradery that we can and that we have a voice and we can get better and we can give back."

NAMI-NYS Participates in the Wailin Jenny's
Concert in Albany

Picture above from exhibiting at 2015 Wailin' Jenny Concert.

On Sunday, August 24th, the Wailin' Jennys played a concert at Albany's Egg Center for Performing Arts. NAMI-NYS was once again honored to be asked to participate in the evening. This was the second time NAMI-NYS had partnered with the band.

NAMI-NYS's Christine Rickeman staffed an information table on NAMI-NYS and sold raffle tickets for attendees to win Walin' Jennys merchandise. During the second set, singer Nicky Mehta explained the importance of mental health and explained that NAMI was participating in the evening's show and encouraged the audience to visit the table to learn more. She then pulled the winning raffle ticket. NAMI-NYS raised almost a $1,000 while talking to hundreds of people about NAMI-NYS and our work.

We are deeply grateful to Nicky and her bandmates for this incredible opportunity.

Communicating Is More Than Finding The Right Words

In a recent NAMI blog, Helpline volunteer Keiko Purnell explores the struggle of attempting to communicate with a mental illness. She provides some tips for engaging in a successful support system, such as listening, beginning with small gestures, and refraining from judgements or assumptions.

Purnell stresses the importance of moving past the automatic response to "How are you?", and into deeper communication that can alleviate some stress from those who suffer with mental health conditions. Purnell also smartly urges readers to remember how "Mistakes are just learning opportunities!"

New York News
My Father Staged His Suicide to Look Like a Murder

In a recent New York Times article, writer Rachel Paula Abrahamson details the heart-wrenching story of her father's suicide, which he disguised as a homicide, so as not to embarrass his family. Abrahamson details how mental health issues can be present anywhere, even when they are unrecognizable or well hidden.

Abrahamson also explains how we must stay aware of warning signs of mental illness in those around us, while avoiding blaming ourselves for what we cannot change. Abrahamson describes her eventual realization of her father's illness by stating: "He was withdrawn and distant...I thought it was us, I thought we were not enough for him. And now I think he must have been depressed. This is how depressed people behave."

Once again, the NAMI-NYS Education Conference will feature ZERO SUICIDE sessions. There will be two concurrent sessions on Saturday, October 27th followed by a suicide healing session.

How You Can Treat Someone Who Doesn't Think They're Mentally Ill

Treating any illness can be difficult, but what do you do when a patient is unaware he/she is ill? Vice writer Carrie Arnold explores this concept in a recent article. The Term, anosognosia, coined by neurologist Joseph Babinski, meaning "without knowledge," refers to a condition in which a person is entirely unaware that he/she has a disorder. "Unlike being in denial, when an individual knows there's something wrong but insists they're fine, these patients are not fibbing or confused."

This condition makes it very difficult for patients to be treated, as they are unaware of any issues and therefore are not actively seeking help. The article also details how Assisted Outpatient Treatment programs can be utilized for people with anosognosia.

NAMI-NYS is thrilled to welcome leading expert on anosognosia, Dr. Xavier Amador, author of the landmark book, I'm Not Sick, I Don't Need Help to present at the 2018 NAMI-NYS Education Conference

OCTOBER 9 - The National Alliance on Mental Illness Champlain Valley will be sponsoring a free one day conference at Clinton Community College on October 9th titled, "Stand Up 2 Stigma." The conference will have a variety of workshops for peers, families, providers, and interested community members.
Our keynote speaker for the event is David Granirer, a counselor, stand-up comic, mental health keynote speaker, and author of The Happy Neurotic: How Fear and Angst Can Lead to Happiness and Success. He founded Stand Up For Mental Health, a program that teaches stand up comedy to people with mental illness or mental health issues as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma. Additionally, the NYS Office Of Mental Health Commissioner, Mental Hygiene Legal Services and many other speakers will be joining us.
The event is expected to provide education & awareness around the effects of stigma, opportunities for reducing stigma, and a chance to become a proactive community member that supports mental health; like one supports cancer and diabetes.
Consider joining us! For those who may remember in 2014 we sponsored Keys to Recovery - 250 were in attendance creating one of the largest mental health conferences in our community. This time, we ask you to take a stand, be the hero, and Stand Up 2 Stigma.
