"Enough ... As You Rest"

Preacher: Pastor Ben Roberts
Worship Leader: Mark Stapleton

Old Testament Reading: Ecclesiastes 2:1-11
Epistle: Hebrews 4:1-9
Holy Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30
How have you been sleeping lately? Are you taking a “day off”, even in retirement? Have you found an exercise or a hobby that you have found “restful”? Being overloaded with stress and work in our lives has us looking for a break, a “Sabbath”…we need rest! But how often does our pursuit of rest turn into something that is anything but restful? How does our pursuit of rest reveal our restlessness? As we continue our series, “Enough”, we will be looking at the many ways we look for “rest” in our lives…and finding them to actually increase our restlessness. We will also look at the rest that Jesus gives us, one that is “easy” and “light”, that aims at the core of our search for rest: “Come to ME…and I will give you rest.”
God's Grace For You When You Aren't
(September 8th - October 20)

Humanity’s pursuit of righteousness…of “enoughness”…has taken a turn. Rather than seeking it “at church”, they seek it out in their everyday lives of work, love, parenting, leisure and politics. But just like any other religions of “do this and that will be enough”, we discover a trail of frustrations, failures and exhaustion because we aren’t enough. But God is. And His grace to us in Jesus is more than enough to say “Enough!” to our endless climbing of ladders that we’ll never reach the top of. In this series, we’ll explore some of those areas of our lives where we end up feeling like we are never enough. Instead, the grace of Jesus makes us ENOUGH!

10/13: Enough…When Everything’s Politics
10/20: Enough…For Your “Transformation”
Join us for the next "The 505" Service, Saturday, October 5th (TODAY) at 5:05 p.m.!

St. John's School Children, Sunday School and Congregation pack boxes!!!
Last year alone, Samaritan’s Purse delivered millions of Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to children around the world. God used these simple gifts to change the lives of many boys and girls and their families. After the outreach events where children received their shoe boxes, many went on to enroll in The Greatest Journey discipleship program. These children were discipled by trained local teachers, and they are now enthusiastically sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. Simple shoebox gifts, packed with love and prayer, are tools for evangelism and discipleship in over 100 countries. Local pastors across the globe are thankful for the opportunity these shoeboxes provide to spread the Gospel in their communities. We are so excited to share with you that after much prayer and in great faith, we set our church’s shoebox goal at 150 shoebox gifts for this year. We believe that God wants to use St. John's to send Operation Christmas Child boxes to children all over the world. We need you to join us as we pray, pack, and ship these gifts.

More details will follow.... look for boxes to be displayed in the Narthex this weekend!
Thank you to all who brought in baby items for Caring Network’s Diaper Derby. Your gifts will bless many families in our community. If you still have items to donate, you can drop them off at Caring Network’s Glen Ellyn office.

SEVENTH GRADE EAGLES IN ACTION PROJECT

During the month of October, seventh graders are collecting stocking stuffers for service members in harm’s way during Christmas. Last year, students brought enough individual stocking stuffers to chapel to fill five boxes. This year, our sewing club members have created Christmas stockings that need filling. This morning, stockings were distributed to each classroom for filling. When one is filled, bring it to chapel as you would your regular chapel donations. Seventh graders will bring your offerings and donations to Operation Support Our Troops (OSOT) – America, Inc. on October 31, where they will volunteer their time stuffing more stockings for United States Service Members. Please bring the items listed below to school on Wednesdays during the month of October

An announcement was made to the congregation about available scholarship funds for any interested high school student to attend the Lutheran Summer Music Institute that was offered at Valparaiso University in July of 2018. The Board of Worship received and approved an application for a student to attend this summer program. That student was church member Rachel Wykert. She was awarded a partial scholarship as part of a two-week program at the Lutheran Summer Music Institute. In the letter below, Rachel expresses her gratitude for the opportunity, and shares her experience.

Additional funding from “The Lutheran Music Summer Camp Scholarship Program” (formally the Eugene Pepich Memorial Music Fund) will be available in 2020 for The Lutheran Summer Music Institute. Applications will be accepted beginning in December of 2019.
