To view a full list of topics, see the link below.

MAFP Members Earn MSMA Awards
Two MAFP member family physicians received special accolades during the MSMA Annual Meeting, held in Jackson in August.

Bryan
Dr. Jennifer Bryan of Flowood was elected as the first female chair of the MSMA Board of Directors. She also earned the MSMA Community Service Award along with two other physicians. That award is given to members who have rendered service 'above and beyond the call of duty' for the betterment of the community. Dr. Bryan and the other physicians started a Facebook page called Physicians for Mississippians to foster connections between MSMA members and it has grown to more than 1,000 members.

Quinn
Dr. Timothy Quinn of Jackson earned the MSMA Excellence in Wellness Promotion Award. He received the honor in part due to his leadership in the MSMA Prediabetes Awareness Campaign, during which he visited dozens of churches and spoke to more than 1,000 congregants encouraging them to make lifestyle changes. Dr. Quinn also coordinated a pilot program at a Jackson high school to promote wellness exams for teenagers.

AAFP, MAFP Respond to CMS Proposed Physician Fee Schedule
On Sept. 5, the AAFP released an official response to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposal to change the Medicare physician fee schedule.  (Review our Aug. 25 e-newsletter for details on the proposal.)

The AAFP's 80-page letter to CMS emphasized four points:
  1. Pay FPs properly and slash their administrative burden
  2. Alternative Payment Models are the best way to support family medicine
  3. FPs must be free to give patients the best care
  4. Solo and small practices need better support
MAFP has also sent a 4-page letter to CMS. We encourage our members to submit your comments electronically at www.regulations.gov and refer to CMS-1693-P.

Four Physicians to Represent Mississippi at COD
Mississippi's official delegates to the AAFP will represent the state October 8-10 at the AAFP Congress of Delegates sessions in New Orleans, LA.

The Congress of Delegates (COD) is the Academy's policy-making body. Its membership consists of two delegates and two alternates from each chapter.  Drs. Tim Alford and Katherine Patterson are Mississippi's delegates and Drs. Susan Chiarito and John Mitchell are alternates. Other COD delegates represent not chapters, but various Academy constituency groups.

The COD is held each year just prior to the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (scheduled for Oct. 9-13 this year in New Orleans). The agenda includes addresses from AAFP officers, resolutions from chapters, and reports from the Board of Directors and commissions.

Free Lunch & Learn for Your Clinic
MAFP offers free Lunch and Learn sessions at clinic locations to teach physicians and their staff about tobacco cessation for patients.

Buckley
MAFP staff member Jewell Buckley, who conducts the sessions, furnishes lunch for you and your staff and provides all materials. There is no cost to you -- all you do is attend. Physicians and nurse practitioners at the session receive CME credits -- 1 hour by attending and 2 additional hours from t2p.

These sessions are part of MAFP's partnership with the MS State Department of Health Office of Tobacco Control. In order to fulfill the conditions for the grant we receive each year, we must schedule a total of 5 Lunch and Learn sessions. We need 2 more clinics for the 2018-19 fiscal year. Will you help us by signing up? Lunch and Learn training sessions must be held before June 30, 2019.  Contact Jewell Buckley to schedule.

The objectives of the Lunch and Learn sessions are:
  1. To educate physicians on how to counsel and educate patients on quitting tobacco through 2 A's and R (Ask, Act and Refer) and motivational interviewing.
  2. To educate physicians on how to make quality patient referrals to the Mississippi Quitline using fax, online, or electronic referral system.
  3. To educate physicians on when and  how to prescribe tobacco cessation medication and/or nicotine replacement therapy for qualified patients.

Important MississippiCAN, CHIP Billing Changes
The Mississippi Division of Medicaid has placed new requirements on the MississippiCAN Coordinated Care Organizations that will take effect Oct. 1, 2018. The purpose of these requirements is to enable pharmacy providers to identify and separate Pharmacy Benefit Manager lines of business in their front-end claims processing systems. Details can be found here.
Apply for Health Equity Fellowship
A new fellowship program designed to develop family physicians into leaders who have subject matter expertise in the social, institutional, and cultural influences that impact health is accepting applications until Sept. 28.

Two AAFP members will be selected for the 2018-19 AAFP Health Equity Fellowship. Through the program, fellows will gain knowledge and experience in translating the concepts of health equity into clinical practice. Fellows will learn from leading experts in the fields of medical education, research, public health, and health care policy. After the year-long fellowship, participants will be equipped to facilitate change to improve their local communities and primary care.

To apply, complete the AAFP's conflict of interest form and send a curriculum vitae (CV), letter of interest, a letter of recommendation from someone familiar with your skills in addressing the social determinants of health, and a letter of support from the applicant's institution, practice or department chair to the AAFP's  Danielle Jones with the subject line 'Health Equity Fellows.'
