“Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.” Rev 12:7-9

Dear Parents and Friends of St. Michael’s School,

Yesterday, on the Feast of the Archangels, St. Michael’s Parish celebrated its 60th anniversary. Fr. Mel spoke passionately about how in 1959 a small group of devout Catholic families, led by our founding pastor, Monsignor Michael Coughlan, laid the foundation for what has become a thriving parish and school, serving more than 3,800 people through over 40 ministries. From its humble beginnings until now, thousands of followers have grown closer to God through the church’s dedicated pastors Monsignor Michael Coughlan, Monsignor Joseph Finnerty, Monsignor Neal Dolan, Bishop John Dolan, and Father Mel Monreal, through the religious communities of the Poor Sisters of St. Clare and the Sisters of Mercy, as well as through her vibrant and devoted parishioners, all working tirelessly to live out the Gospel message every day.

Bishop John, in his book, Who Is Like God? A Nine Day Journey with St. Michael the Archangel , explains, “As part of their office, we understand from Scripture that angels are messengers of God, worshipers of our Lord, defenders and protectors. In Michael’s case, we recognize him as both defender and protector.”

On Friday, St. Michael’s School students gathered in the Holy Family Center and learned a little bit more about their patron. In Family Groups, they discussed the qualities that St. Michael possesses, and then they created posters, to be displayed around the school, as a constant reminder about how each student and teacher should defend and protect one another in the same way that St. Michael defends and protects us.

Michael’s name in Hebrew is (Mikha’el), which means, “ Who is like God? ” Bishop John reminds us that “the answer is no one.” We are grateful to St. Michael who serves as our protector and our patron, and with his help, our school and parish will continue to help many more generations of families in their faith journey.

Please assist our efforts in Enhancing the Present and Ensuring the Future by turning in your “Commitment Card” to the office by Friday, October 4. (If you did not receive a Commitment Card at Back-to-School Night, you can pick one up in the office). One lucky winner will receive $100 in gift scrip and a complimentary frozen treat on Fridays during the month of October for their children.
