WEEK 4 TOP GAMES

Ultra-talented Grayson and Marietta square off
Grayson at Marietta is the premiere matchup in Class AAAAAAA this weekend and there will be plenty of storylines to soak in as the action unfolds. Both teams are legitimate state title contenders and they boast two of the most talented rosters to come through the state in terms of high-profile prospects and D1 recruits. Grayson and Marietta have only played one other time in their history, a 21-14 Grayson victory in the first round of the 2009 playoffs. Just three games into the season, Marietta's junior quarterback Harrison Bailey has already thrown for 1,087 yards (362.3 ypg) and 11 touchdowns.

Cedar Grove at McEachern
The Class AAA-based Cedar Grove Saints have already built up quite the resume in 2018 and their trip to McEachern tonight is a chance to prove they can compete with one of the most talented teams and programs in Georgia's highest classification. Cedar Grove's 34-30 win over Alabama's Hewitt-Trussville in a nationally televised game on Aug. 25 lifted the Saints to the No. 62 team in the nation according to Maxpreps. McEachern, at No. 97, is also listed in the national top 100 and this will be a serious test for both teams, as well as their first-ever meeting.

Northside-Columbus vs. Cairo
The Cairo Syrupmakers will look to avoid the program's first 0-3 start since the 2001 season this Friday night as they host 2-0 Northside-Columbus for their Region 1-AAAA opener. Northside-Columbus opened the season with a 48-15 win over Shaw in region action and then followed it with a 20-19 non-region win over Spencer. This is a strong start by first-year head coach David Nurberg and the ascending Patriots program that carries a 4-year playoff streak (the longest in school history) this season. Cairo's resume includes a 15-year playoff streak, but there are areas of improvement seen in both of the early losses that will need to be resolved before taking on its eight Region 1 opponents. The Syrupmakers fell 15-14 to Thomasville to open the season and dropped a 15-7 contest with Bainbridge before taking a Week 3 bye. There is a two-part question facing Cairo this week that remains completely unanswered. Can Cairo's offense start making plays, and if so, who is going to be the guys to make them.

Hardaway vs. Carver-Columbus
Yet to allow a single point this season, Hardaway has outscored Kendrick (49-0) and Fayette County (28-0) by a combined 77-0 heading into this matchup. As impressive as this start is, Hardaway hasn't made the playoffs since 2010 and last year's 38-31 loss to Carver-Columbus proved to be the difference when the Tigers earned the No. 4 seed over Hardaway with a matching 3-4 region record. This year's Carver-Columbus team is led by first-year head coach Corey Joyner and they are off to a promising 2-0 start with victories over Class AAAAA Harris County (20-16) and Class AA Spencer (17-10). The first key to this game will be the Carver defense against the Hardaway running game, which is led by senior Ja'Ron Early, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound running back that has paced the offense with 222 rushing yards and five touchdowns through the first two games. The second key will be the Carver offense against a Hardaway defense that has already shutout two opponents.

Chapel Hill vs. Starr's Mill
Chapel Hill sits at 2-0 and gets ready to host Class AAAAA's Starr's Mill this Friday. This will be the third straight year that the Chapel Hill Panthers and the Starr's Mill Panthers have squared off, and Starr's Mill has won both meetings (28-27 in 2016 and 56-21 in 2017). In last year's blowout loss, Chapel Hill gave up 342 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Offensively, junior quarterback KJ Burton passed for 281 yards and three touchdowns, but he completed just 8-of-20 pass attempts and threw three interceptions. This year's Chapel Hill team has been stout on the defensive side of the ball, scoring a 10-7 win over Class AAAAAAA Newnan to open the season and scoring out a 28-0 shutout against Ola Week 2. Coming off the bye, expect Chapel Hill to be highly competitive in this game and put themselves in position to beat Starr's Mill for the first time.
THURSDAY SCORES

Lovejoy rallies past Drew for 34-32 victory
During Thursday night football, Drew went up early on Lovejoy 14-6 entering the half. The Titans managed to keep the lead for the majority of the third, scoring 18 more points, but the Wildcats mounted a comeback and took a 34-32 lead. They shutout Drew for the rest of the game to claim a 44-32 victory and get their second win of the season. Beach hosted Windsor Forest but were unable to contain the Knights offense. Windsor Forest was first on the board in the first quarter with a touchdown but were unbale to convert the extra point. Later in the quarter, Beach fumbled the ball on the Windsor Forest 5-yard line. Knights defender Damani Frazier was quick to recover the ball and returned it 95-yards for a touchdown. The point kept coming as Windsor Forest went on the defeat Beach 45-6 for their second win of the season.

In softball, East Jackson rallied to upset class AAA third-ranked Jackson County 5-4. Top-ranked East Coweta proved again that they belong at the top of class AAAAAAA, soundly defeating Northgate 8-0 to get their twelfth win of the season and keep their undefeated season alive. A close contest between Collins Hill and Mill Creek almost resulted in an Eagles upset, but the hawks held on tight to eek out a 6-5 victory.

On the volleyball court, Lassiter and Kell played out three matches, ending in a 3-0 sweep for the Trojans to extend their win streak to nine. In class AAAAAA, a matchup between third-ranked Pope and sixth-ranked Sequoyah ended with a 3-0 victory for the Greyhounds. Class AAAA top dog Blessed Trinity strung together a pair of wins on the night, a 2-0 sweep over Brookwood and an impressive 2-1 victory over Pace Academy.
