VIDEO & PHOTOS: Mission #InspireTheFuture accomplished
Operation #InspireTheFuture, a partnership between the City of Rancho Cordova and the California Capital Airshow, dazzled more than 2,000 students in a special assembly on Aug. 30.
Students from our Rancho Cordova elementary, middle, and high schools were treated to a surprise landing by the Sacramento County Sheriff Department's Huey Helicopter at Dave Roberts Community Park. Many students and their families received free tickets for the upcoming California Capital Airshow  Sept. 21-23, where they will get the opportunity to not only watch the show, but interact with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) exhibits involving flight.
During the Aug. 30 assembly, students heard personal stories of success from members of the U.S. Armed Forces and law enforcement officers. Students also had the chance to ask questions about their career paths and goals.

Students earn real-world work experience in District program
More than 80 students returned to school this year with a head start on working in the real world thanks to unique partnerships with dozens of local businesses.

This summer, students from Cordova, Folsom, and Vista del Lago high schools participated in the first ever, district-wide Career and Technical Education Summer Preceptorship Program, or CTESPP for short.

Where did it entail? Each student was placed in one of 23 local businesses for an internship experience that introduced them to a career they found interesting. They reported to their workplace, Monday through Thursday for four week. Each Friday, students reported to a high school campus for a day of "soft skill" training by participating teachers: resume writing, job interview skills and career exploration, for instance.

All student participants went through a rigorous application and interview process to be considered, and had to demonstrate that they were enrolled in a

VIDEOS: Schools 'Color the World with Kindness'
The district's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) theme for Cool 2 Be Kind Week, Aug. 27-31 was "Color the World with Kindness."

Schools participated in various welcoming, inclusive activities throughout the week promoting kindness and character. Some made "happy rocks," built "kindness walls," held anti-bullying assemblies, and built a human kindness rainbow to name a few.

Here's a video collage highlighting some of the creative activities throughout our schools.

White Rock Elementary was inspired to make their very own kindness video !
VIDEO: School absenteeism not always what you think
Missing even just a few days of school can create real challenges for students and teachers.

That's the message in a video by Attendance Works , a national organization that raises awareness about issues of school attendance and their impacts on student achievement.

"Too often we think that absences aren't a problem as long as they're excused, or that a child's learning won't be affected unless he or she misses a lot of days all in a row," says Hedy Chang, founder and director of Attendance Works .

"But research shows that missing 10% of the school year - which can be just 2 or 3 days every month - can add up to so much lost time in the classroom, that children just can't keep up," she explains.

Many parents and caregivers don't realize that poor attendance isn't just a problem in high school. It can start as early as kindergarten and preschool. Many of these early absences aren't truancy or skipping school - they're excused absences . Even so, they all add up to lost learning time.

Watch the full video to learn more about some of the misconceptions about school attendance , and how school leaders, families, community groups and others can work together on solutions.

When: 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24

It's more than a meal: It's more resources for your school
At many of our Folsom Cordova schools, we're asking our families to apply for Free and Reduced Meals - even if they're not sure they'll use them.

Why? Because it turns out those applications could increase the amount of money your school receives to pay for resources that help students: academic coaches, technology, musical instruments, field trips and more!

Schools receive more money and resources based on the number of families who qualify for free and reduced meals - regardless of whether they decide to use the program.

Watch this video to learn more . Visit www.fcusd.org/mealapps to see income eligibility, and click here to apply online in the privacy of your home - no need to bring a paper form to school!

Important note:   Families in the following schools DO NOT need to fill out a meal application (for school funding purposes, families at these schools MUST complete alternative income verification forms):
  • Cordova Gardens Elementary
  • Cordova Meadows Elementary
  • Cordova Villa Elementary
  • Kinney High School
  • Mills Middle School
  • Peter J. Shields Elementary
  • Prospect Community Day School
  • Rancho Cordova Elementary
  • White Rock Elementary
  • Williamson Elementary

Community Readers needed! Help boost a student's reading skills
Would you like to help a young student become a better reader? Some of our students just need a little extra practice after school. Our award-winning Community Readers program matches volunteers in the community with a 1st or 2nd grader, struggling to read at grade level. Just twice a week, 30 minutes at a time for six weeks can make a big difference.Take a look at this video of volunteer experiences to see what it looks like.

Our program will begin the week of Oct. 15 and the tutoring times are 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. If you are interested, now is the time to become an FCUSD Volunteer and sign up for a Training Session.

Giving Back: Folsom Community Service Day

Mark your calendars for Sept. 15. The fifth annual Folsom Community Service Day is coming up and volunteer sign up is live now. FCUSD is looking for volunteers! Families, neighbors and community partners can help weed and spread garden mulch at five of our schools: Empire Oaks Elementary, Russell Ranch Elementary, Folsom Middle School, Vista del Lago and Folsom High School.

This is a great way to become involved with a local school, make new friends and meet the principal. Whether you have a student in one of our schools or are a community member, your involvement enhances the learning experience for our students by providing extra resources, care and pride in education.

Please click on these links to sign up for a project and learn more about Folsom Community Service Day, the many projects and the history of how Folsom residents give back to their community and schools.
