The Labor Day weekend `Ohana retreat was a great success. Nineteen adults and eight keiki gathered at Camp Slogett at Koke`e State Park for a weekend of fun, food, and fellowship. Wet weather was not a deterrent to campfires, hiking, and outdoor fun. While indoors games, jigsaw puzzles, and reading kept folks occupied. Everyone pitched in to help in the kitchen with the excellent meals. All of the activities gave those present an opportunity to get to know one another better and realize how blessed we are to be a part of All Saints’. Check out the slideshow of this year’s retreat.
ALL SAINTSʻ SUPPORTS ANIMAL BALANCE CLINIC
Sterilization Effort Focuses On Community Cats
Animal Balance is hosting spay/neuter clinics in both Kapa`a and Kilauea for community cats and some owned cats September 3 rd - 14 th . Animal Balance set up in Kapa`a at All Saintsʻ Episcopal Church from September 3 rd to 7 th . Next the team will move to Kilauea, where the clinic will be staged at a private residence.

"The goal is to sterilize 70 percent of cats in each of the community colonies, which would trigger an evening out and then eventual shrinking of the population.

It’s part of an ongoing, community-based effort to manage the feral cat, or community cat population — those cats that don’t have owners, and Animal Balance is working with Kauai Community Cat Project to get the job done.

In 2017, Animal Balance and local volunteers sterilized more than 600 animals in a six-day Mobile Animal Sterilization Hospital (MASH) Campaign that was open to both cats and dogs."

THIS WEEK IN SUNDAY SCHOOL
Jacob and Esau Make Peace, Not War
After Jacob stole Esau’s birthright and then, through deception, stole the blessing that their father Isaac meant for Esau, Jacob ran away to escape his brother’s murderous wrath.

Now, many years later, Jacob returns home and knows that he must face Esau. The Bible says that “Jacob went on his way and the angels of God met him” (Genesis 32:1). Afraid that Esau will try to attack him and his family, Jacob divides his family strategically and then prepares to meet Esau. Assuming Esau’s wrath toward him, Jacob also sends his servants ahead with portions of his possessions to give to Esau in order to appease his brother and placate him. And he prays to God.

The night before his encounter with Esau, Jacob wrestles with a mysterious man who, at daybreak, blesses Jacob and gives him a new name — Israel.

But as Jacob approaches Esau, Esau runs up to Jacob and throws his arms around him and kisses him. Both cry. Esau had forgiven Jacob and the brothers reconcile. But Jacob still is wary of his brother and turns down Esau’s invitation for them to journey together.
THE FEAST OF ALEXANDER CRUMMELL
Union of Black Episcopalians Sunday
On September 10 th , the Episcopal Church celebrates the life and legacy of a notable saint, the Reverend Alexander Crummell. This day is also designated as Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) Sunday to commemorate the racial justice ministry of this organization which was an outgrowth of Crummell’s advocacy.

The Rev. Alexander Crummell was born March 3, 1819, in New York City to Charity Hicks, a free woman of color, and Boston Crummell, a former slave. Both parents were active abolitionists. The first African-American newspaper, Freedom’s Journal, was published out of their home.

As a young man, Crummell was driven out of an academy in New Hampshire, dismissed as a candidate for Holy Orders in New York, and rejected for admittance to General Seminary because of his race. He was eventually ordained in 1844 as a priest in the Diocese of Massachusetts, but left for England after being excluded from participating in diocesan convention.

Crummell studied at Queens’ College, Cambridge and was the first officially black student recorded as graduating. Soon after, he traveled to Liberia as a missionary to convert native Africans to Christianity and educate them. Crummell lived and worked for 20 years in Liberia. Finally, political opposition, lack of funding, and the potential for life-threatening violence forced him to return to the United States.

Upon return to the U.S., he was called to St. Mary’s Episcopal Mission in Washington, DC. In 1875 he and his congregation founded St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the first independent black Episcopal church in the city. When in 1882 southern bishops proposed that a separate missionary district be created for black congregations, Crummell was a founding leader in establishing a national black convocation to fight the proposal. After retiring from St. Luke’s in 1894, Crummell taught at Howard University until 1897. He died September 10, 1898, at the age of 79.

The Union of Black Episcopalians (UBE) is a national faith-based advocacy organization. Visit UBE’s website, www.ube.org , to learn more about their ministry of justice and racial reconciliation.
