Gary Greetings in the name of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

In the reading for this Sunday from James, the author writes, "My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ?"

Reading those words reminds me that I am just as guilty as most of us. We try, but it's uncomfortable, it feels different and something just makes us feel a little awkward. We really seem to value certain folks more than others. We gravitate toward those who are put together--who have more resources, aren't emotionally needy or simply won't challenge our own sense of being.

In 2006 a song was released by Bowling for Soup called "High School Never Ends." The older I get, the more I agree. As adults we still sort ourselves into categories--sports fans, wealthy, country music fans, cultural background, racial background, sexuality, political beliefs, faith background, you name it. You probably find people who are most like you to spend time with. You don't even do it on purpose--it's just easier or less awkward to hang out with people who think and act like you.

But what does God want us to do? Not play favorites. Be in relationship with those who are different. Show love to those we might not usually interact with. Not just give money to the poor, but talk with them and listen to their stories. You get the idea. I believe it's time to get uncomfortable.

Relational God, you never shy away from the tricky situations. Teach us to break out of our comfort zone, to forge relationships with those who are different. And give us the grace to try again when we fail. Amen.

See ya Sunday!

Blessings,
Fr. Gary+

Pastoral Care News

We have two new programs involving Pastoral Care:
  • Visitation Partners - volunteers from the congregation who keep in contact (calls, emails, visits, cards, etc.) with parishioners with long-term health or other concerns. They give a general report to the committee once a month. We still have a few folks who need visitors, so if you are interested in this important ministry, or know someone who could benefit from it, please contact Deacon Martha.
  • Grief program - All Saints has a long history of taking care of families of parishioners who have died by providing a meal and supporting them individually through cards and visits immediately after the death. We also offer the Blue Service around the holidays, because the holidays can be such a difficult time for families, even years after someone has died. The Deacons are implementing a new program that consists of thoughtful and helpful mailings about the grieving process sent at 3 month intervals throughout the first year of loss. There are also specialized mailings for dealing with the holidays and special types of loss (suicide, infant death). Please make sure you let the Deacons know if you know of a parishioner who has lost an immediate family member (spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, or grandchild). We started the program August 1.
We also have another new program that we hope to have in place within the next few weeks. Before he died, Terry Nichols had been talking with Deacon Martha and Christine Borner about beginning a support group for folks with mental health issues, such as depression, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, etc. We are working to form such a group that would meet at the church and call it "Terry's Group" in memory of him. The group would meet once a week for information and support, probably on Mondays. More details about an upcoming informational meeting will be provided soon. This is not to be a therapy group and is not meant to replace visits with doctors or therapists. Eventually we would like to begin another support group for family members of those who have these issues. If you, or someone you know might benefit from such a group, please contact Deacon Martha or Christine Borner.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

*   Work Day:  We will have a parish workday at 8AM on Saturday, September 8th.  Please put the date on your calendar and join us in sprucing up the church and the grounds before the Bishop visits. Many hands make light work! "Please don't fall for that voice that tells you someone else will do it"

Bishop's Visitation: Our bishop, The Rt. Rev. José McLoughlin, will make his parochial visit on  Sunday, September 16, 2018.  A bishop's visit is time for celebration as well as Baptism, Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation. For new members this is a time for being received or confirmed into your new faith community. Please let Fr. Gary know if you would like to be confirmed or received.

Bishop's/Confirmation Reception:  A list has been posted in the Family Life Center of the plans for the reception on September 16th.  If you can provide an item, please sign up on the list which includes plates/napkins as well as food.  If you want to bring something not on the list, that would be wonderful.  Any and all help is appreciated.

*   BREAD MINISTRY COORDINATOR needed!  As you know, our last day with you is September 23.  Among, other things, I coordinate the Bread Ministry.  It is an extremely EASY ministry to do.  It literally can be done in an hour or less (the scheduling part). We have faithful volunteers who each take a month and pass the "bread bag" to each other. I usually schedule in January, and All Saints is scheduled through January 2019.  If you would like to talk about this ministry, please let me know!  Chris Butterworth 704-396-6053

*   Adult Christian Formation: Beginning October 7th, Mr. Brett Brown will be our facilitator as we view a video series presentation called "The Fall of the Pagans and the Origins of Medieval Christianity."  Professor Kenneth W. Harl, a scholar on Classical and Byzantine History at Tulane University will be your guide. This is a multi-week study and it is not required to attend every session so do not let vacations and other plans keep you away.

Beautification of The Life Center Foyer & Offices:  Thanks to all of you who contributed to the painting fund for the Family Life Center.  Donations of $2,760.00 were received.  The painting cost was $3,148.00.  The carpet was paid with funds raised from the Yard Sale this past year.  Thanks to all who helped in this project to keep our building in good shape.

Ministry Schedule:  The September through December ministry schedule is available on the table in the Family Life Center.

Family Promise:  The remaining 2018 date that we will be host to the Family Promise guests are 11/4. Family Promise is a community program that provides housing and support to families that are less fortunate. All Saints is one of the original churches that helped establish this ministry more than ten years ago. We host families in this ministry four times a year at our parish facilities with assistance from the Redeemer Lutheran Church here in Gastonia. There are many ways to support this ministry. During hosting weeks we need parishioners to greet and engage guests, to provide homework and enrichment activities for the children, to prepare and serve dinner, and to spend the night. The other way that parishioners can assist these families is to donate items that our guests need. Suggested items to donate are clothes, detergent, toothbrushes and toothpaste, small first aid kits, hair products, soap and/or body wash, suitcases (both used or new), 10, 20, and 30 gallon storage tubs w/ lids, towels and washcloths (both used or new), bed linens (both used or new), family friendly movies or videos, board games, & craft supplies.  For more information, or to volunteer please contact Marc Dudley at 704-718-4044 or [email protected].

*  Cooking for the Army:  On Saturday, September 8th at 9am, parishioners will gather to cook approximately 700 meals for The Salvation Army & Cornerstone Ministry. We are always in need of more hands to assist in this life-giving project since "more hands make light work." If you are interested in this ministry, please contact the church office and we will put your name on the monthly e-mail reminder.

Building Use Policy:  Our buildings are being used more and more and we are experiencing more scheduling conflicts with our church spaces. Effective immediately, all rooms/buildings will be reserved and scheduled ONLY by the Parish Administrator through a submission form available at the office.  For planning purposes every parishioner is able to access the Church Calendar, which reflects reserved rooms and activities, on our website ( www.allsaintsgastonia.org) by using the News & Events tab. Additionally, if you are in need of advance set-up for the room or event you are scheduling (night before, earlier than the event, etc.) please take that into consideration when reserving. We appreciate your understanding realizing that this will improve our ability to serve our parishioners and ministries.

Bible Study:  Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis is the book being studied.  We have just gotten started so if you would like to join us please do so on Wednesday's in the Family Life Center at 10:00.

* Parish Nurse Ministry:  blood pressures will be taken on the second Sunday of the month  after the 8 and 10:30 services.  Nurses interested in the parish nurse ministry please contact Cheryl Saylor, MSN.

Yoga at All Saints:  Wednesdays  Noon to 1 PM  - $5 (multi-level Beginning )  Integral Style Traditional Hatha Yoga. (This is the ancient style which is gentle, personal, go at your own pace) Our country changed the ancient yoga into all kinds of fun interesting sometimes not so safe competitive practices .  Our classes are based on safety in movement  and include the healing breathing techniques and stress reducing relaxation.   Judy devoted her teaching to bringing the "real" ancient technique to people at a very reasonable cost because it is so healing and personal.

Saturdays  9AM to11 AM  (multi-level advanced) Integral Style Traditional Hatha Yoga.  Again, this class is go at your own pace, gentle and personal.  It is a 2 hour practice.   ( if you are athletic or exercise a lot this class may feel like a more thorough  practice)  People come to both classes with physical problems if their doctor approves and modify the practice as needed.  ($7 a class - Half of each $7 fee is donated to All Saints).

Stretch, Strengthen, Balance, Tone, Breathe, Focus, Relax and Heal.  Any questions, contact Judy Blankenship, M.A., CPT, ERYT 500, Reiki Master (704) 867-7176   [email protected]

Book Exchange: The book exchange is set-up in the Family Life Center in a bookcase along the wall to your left when entering the big room.  Read and return and perhaps contribute some you have as well.

Amazon Smile:  All Saints is NOW a registered nonprofit on Amazon Smile!  We need your help and assistance.  Amazon will give .5% to All Saints on every purchase made through Amazon Smile.      - Tuesday & Thursday at 7:15PM:  Please join Dana Wolfe for a fun workout made for everyone.  The class that started the dance-fitness revolution and changed the way we look at a "workout" forever. It's fun, effective and best of all? Made for everyone!  ($5/class or $20/month)

*  First Sunday of the month Coffee Hour:  We need someone to set up and clean up only
for Coffee Hour on Parish Breakfast Sunday.  You do not have to provide any food, just set out the food left from breakfast.  Please sign up for this on the Coffee Hour sign-up sheet.

*  Food Pantry:  Please help us restock the shelves!  Through your generosity, we have been able to help many families and individuals.

*  Preaching ROTA (rotation) at All Saints: We are blessed at All Saints to hear three different voices in preaching. Each one of our clergy; Gary, Cris and Martha, have experienced the world and see the world differently and through different lenses.  Because our community is made up of different people from different experiences we need to hear different voices. At All Saints, Deacon Cris preaches on the 3rd  Sunday of each month, Deacon Martha preaches on the 1st  Sunday of alternate months, and Fr. Gary preaches the other Sundays. We hope you find the different voices fulfilling in your spiritual journey.

*  Salvation Army Service Schedule:  Monday, September 10th - Team #5.  (Linda Boyd & Charlie Jenkins)

* Prayer List:  Our prayer list grows rapidly.  We ask all parishioners to keep the office informed so that our prayer list remains current and manageable.

*  Partnership: All Saints has entered into a relationship with the YMCA's Resource Connection Gateway.  This relationship enables us to help those in need more rapidly and efficiently while also addressing long-term needs versus only addressing immediate concerns.  If you would like more information please see Fr. Gary.

We have a couple of spots open and you will find this ministry is a true blessing to all involved. The schedule is on bulletin board in Family Life Center.

*  All Saints Sermons online: Thanks to John Woodward, our sermons are available in audio and video on our website at:  www.allsaintsgastonia.org/sermons

* Planned Giving: Programs for Outreach Ministries are an important part of our parish. You can ensure the continuation of these programs by setting up an endowment or including a bequest in your will. For more information see Fr. Gary or call the foundation at 828-225-6656.

The Collect

G rant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

The First Lesson:  Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favour is better than silver or gold.

The rich and the poor have this in common:
the Lord is the maker of them all.

Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity,
and the rod of anger will fail.

Those who are generous are blessed,
for they share their bread with the poor.

Do not rob the poor because they are poor,
or crush the afflicted at the gate;

for the Lord pleads their cause
and despoils of life those who despoil them.

Psalm 125

Those who trust in the  Lord are like Mount Zion, *
which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.
2 The hills stand about Jerusalem; *
so does the  Lord stand round about his people,
from this time forth for evermore.
3 The scepter of the wicked shall not hold sway over the land alloted to the just,
so that the just shall not put their hands to evil.
4 Show your goodness, O  Lord, to those who are good *
and to those who are true of heart.
5 As for those who turn aside to crooked ways,
the  Lord will lead them away with the evildoers; *
but peace be upon Israel.

The Epistle:  James 2:1-10, 14-17

My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, "Have a seat here, please," while to the one who is poor you say, "Stand there," or, "Sit at my feet," have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you?

You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill," and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

The Gospel: Mark 7:24-37

Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, "Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." But she answered him, "Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." Then he said to her, "For saying that, you may go-the demon has left your daughter." So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened." And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, "He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak."

Saint Day / Feast of the Week

Constance, Nun, and Her Companions
Commonly called "The Martyrs of Memphis," 1878

In August, 1878, Yellow Fever invaded the city of Memphis for the
third time in ten years. By the month's end the disease had become
epidemic and a quarantine was ordered. While 30,000 citizens had
fled in terror, 20,000 more remained to face the pestilence. As cases
multiplied, death tolls averaged 200 daily. When the worst was over
ninety percent of the population had contracted the Fever; more than
5,000 people had died.

In that time of panic and flight, many brave men and women,
both lay and cleric, remained at their posts of duty or came as
volunteers to assist despite the terrible risk. Notable among these
heros were Constance, Superior of the work of the Sisters of St.
Mary in Memphis, and her Companions. The Sisters had come to
Memphis in 1873, at Bishop Quintard's request, to found a Girls
School adjacent to St. Mary's Cathedral. When the 1878 epidemic
began, George C. Harris, the Cathedral Dean, and Sister Constance
immediately organized relief work among the stricken. Helping were
six of Constance's fellow Sisters of St. Mary; Sister Clare from St.
Margaret's House, Boston; the Reverend Charles C. Parsons, Rector of
Grace and St. Lazarus Church, Memphis; and the Reverend Louis S.
Schuyler, assistant at Holy Innocents, Hoboken. The Cathedral group
also included three physicians, two of whom were ordained Episcopal
priests, the Sisters' two matrons, and several volunteer nurses from
New York. They have ever since been known as "The Martyrs of
Memphis," as have those of other Communions who ministered in
Christ's name during this time of desolation.

The Cathedral buildings were located in the most infected region of
Memphis. Here, amid sweltering heat and scenes of indescribable
horror, these men and women of God gave relief to the sick, comfort
to the dying, and homes to the many orphaned children. Only two
of the workers escaped the Fever. Among those who died were
Constance, Thecla, Ruth and Frances, the Reverend Charles Parsons
and the Reverend Louis Schuyler. The six martyred Sisters and
priests are buried at Elmwood Cemetery. The monument marking
the joint grave of Fathers Parsons and Schuyler bears the inscription:
"Greater Love Hath No Man." The beautiful High Altar in St. Mary's
Cathedral, Memphis, is a memorial to the four Sisters.
