FutureEd is an Independent, Solution-oriented Voice for American Education.

Greetings,

It's been an extraordinary year in the education world, with new leadership and new priorities in Washington and the states. Since our launch in early March, FutureEd has sought to help policymakers and practitioners navigate the complex and fast-changing education landscape with independent research and analysis.

In the past month, research advisor Nora Gordon, an economics professor at Georgetown's McCourt School of Public Policy, outlined the likely impact of Congress' tax reform package on K-12 education and explored the consequences of the Trump administration's net neutrality decision for the nation's disadvantaged students.

Best-selling author and FutureEd senior fellow Jeff Selingo offered an innovative solution to struggling colleges and universities.

We turned to sports for insights into teacher leadership and school culture, with new senior fellow Mike Goldstein, the founder of the highly regarded Match charter schools in Boston, writing a pair of blog posts drawing lessons for educators from the New England Patriots' defensive assistant coach Brendan Daly, a former teacher.

We continued to explore the importance of chronic absenteeism as an non-academic indicator of school performance with a commentary piece in EdSource by editorial director Phyllis Jordan in the wake of California's release of new absenteeism data. Research director Raegen Miller provided new insights into teacher absenteeism.

Finally, our research advisory board members and fellows shared their experiences with limiting the use of electronics in their college classrooms.

Beyond our network, researchers Susan Bush-Mecenas and Julie A. Marsh of USC drew on their new study of New Orleans schools for insights into how to get teachers to embrace more meaningful evaluations. And Karin Chenoweth of Education Trust shared a podcast showing how an Ohio school district has boosted achievement rates among low-income students.

Happy holidays and best wishes for the new year. We'll see you in 2018!

Tom
