Child Abuse May Lead to Early Puberty
[Source:  Psych Central]

New research establishes that child abuse can influence physical development as well as psychological maturity.

Pennsylvania State University investigators discovered young girls who are exposed to sexual abuse are likely to physically mature and hit puberty earlier than non-abused peers.

While it has long been known that maltreatment can affect a child's psychological development, the new study shows that the stress of abuse can impact the physical growth and maturation of adolescents as well.

Special Ed Funding Maintained in Trump Budget Blueprint
[Source:  Education Week]

The "skinny" budget blueprint released by the Trump administration Thursday would maintain current spending levels for special education-about $13 billion, most of which is money sent directly to states.
The budget blueprint is just the beginning of a long process.

While this document shows the administration's priorities, it is Congress that ultimately passes spending legislation. And lawmakers have their own ideas about what programs should be cut, and which should be kept.

Studying the Brain's Suspension System in TBIs
[Source:  Washington University in St. Louis]

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can be devastating and debilitating. Despite intense interest and years of study, the exact mechanisms linking force and neurological injury remain unclear. Researchers know that the membranes separating the skull from the brain play a key role in absorbing shock and preventing damage caused during a head impact, but the details remain largely mysterious.

Stem Cells Show Promise For Treating Autism
[Source: Disability Scoop]

A small, but promising study suggests that stem cells from a child's own cord blood may offer an effective treatment for autism symptoms.

Most children on the spectrum who received an infusion from their own umbilical cord blood showed improvements in behavior, communication and socialization, among other measures, while experiencing no significant downsides from the treatment.

A Mother's Voice May Help Stabilize Preterm Infants
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

A recent review of published research indicates that hearing their mother's voice can benefit the health of preterm infants.

The review included 15 studies with 512 infants from 2000 to 2015. Hearing the maternal voice, either recorded or live, was linked with the physiologic and behavioral stabilization of preterm infants with fewer cardiorespiratory events. There is insufficient evidence to evaluate long-term effects, however.

School Nurse Corner: Do Healthy Lunches Improve Test Scores?
[Source:  The Atlantic]

For more than a decade, standardized-test scores have been the dominant metric for measuring what public-school students know and are able to do. No Child Left Behind, the sweeping federal education law enacted in 2002, ushered in a new era of student testing and school compliance. And in the years that followed-to meet targets and avoid  sanctions-education leaders at the local

School Psych Corner: How to Teach Kids to Say 'I'm Sorry' & Mean it
Editor's Note:  Thank You, School Psyched, Your School Psychologist for sharing this article with us

[Source: Great Schools]

I never thought I'd be the kind of mom who forces her kid to apologize. And then the hitting started.

When he was around 2, my sweet, energetic boy began whumping his friends, his dad, and me. Sometimes the hits were born from excitement, but they were also often the angry result of being asked to do something he didn't want to do - share, take a bath, get dressed. There's nothing like the sound of your kid's hand smacking another kid's face - followed by the horrified reaction of

SLP Corner: Great New Preschool Games for 2017
[Source:  Play on Words]

I'm always on the lookout for great new preschool games that teach while little ones are having loads of fun.  A good preschool game has an element of pretend play to engage the children such as playing in a vegetable garden, literally showering a puppy dog, or pretending to be a super hero, collecting clues.
