Join us on Sunday and bring your backpacks to worship! We will bless all students, teachers, and administrators who have returned to the classroom this fall.
After worship, join us for a picnic to kick off the new program year and celebrate the renovation of the Dowd Commons. All are welcome!
After lunch member Kathy Farkas, who recently attended General Assembly as a commissioner from the Presbytery of the Western Reserve, will share some takeaways from her time at GA.
A main dish of fried chicken along with potato salad and ice cream will be provided. Please bring a dish to share:

 Worship this Week
We begin our September sermon series on Loneliness and Belonging by reflecting on the relationship between the first human beings as depicted in Genesis 2. What does this account of creation teach us about the pain of loneliness and the joy of belonging? This week's text is Genesis 2:4-9, 15-25 and Amy Starr Redwine's sermon is entitled "Wired for Belonging."
Music Notes
This Sunday, our musical selections resonate with the creation story found in Genesis. The choir will open worship with the first movement of Joseph Haydn's Creation oratorio (a large musical work set to Biblical text). Following the scripture reading and sermon, the choir and soloists will sing of the praises heard throughout heaven as God completed the creation of heaven, earth, and all that dwells within and among them. When Haydn visited England in the early 1790s, he heard a number of Handel's musical compositions, including The Messiah. Upon returning to his native Vienna, Haydn immediately began working on his own oratorio, The Creation. For Haydn, this musical work reflected his personal faith in God: "There are in this world so few happy and contented people... perhaps [The Creation] will become a source in which the person bowed down by care, or burdened with business matters, will for a while find peace and rest."

 Pray for those affected by gun violence
Since a gunman opened fire at
Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012, killing 26 people, 20 of them children; 1,018 people in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. Since last month, 19 more individuals have died by gun violence in Cuyahoga County. The names of those at least 18 years of age are: Devin D'Shawn Allen, Matthew C. Casselberry, Raymond M. Gould, Jaylin I'An Glanton, Gary Allen Dickens, Jeremy William Foust, Thomas Hickman, Sir Roll Sizemore, Kaelin Torrence, Mark Justin Warn, Michael Joshua Warn, Richard Harlan Warn, Amia Chardai Martin, Yuri Lee West, Mario Marco King, Maurice Jaivone Johnson, William T. Matwijiw, Myrtis Darius Huey Sr., and Cortez Earl Ruffin. Seven of those who died were by suicide.
Believing God calls us to be peacemakers, by Session action, we include in the Prayer of Thanksgiving, Intercession and Petition each month specific concern for people affected by gun violence and addressing the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell. Join us, in this time of increased concern over deadly gun violence in our county, our country, and the world, in remembering and praying that God will show us the way to a new commitment to Peace on Earth. The Church of the Covenant partners with God Before Guns, a multi-faith coalition of individuals and faith communities created in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, to reduce gun violence. Special Congregational Meeting:
The session has called a congregational meeting after worship on Sunday, September 16, to vote on the nomination of Jim Prince to fill a vacated term in the trustees class of 2020.

Covenant Commons: This year, with our newly renovated Dowd Commons ready to use, the Ministry of Faith Formation will present opportunities for spiritual growth and renewal each week following worship. On the first Sunday of each month, we will gather for a community meal; on the second Sunday, to hear from members of our church or larger community; on the third Sunday, for an intergenerational activity that puts our faith into action; on the fourth Sunday, for a book discussion; and on any fifth Sundays, for a new members class. Each program will run from 11:30-12:30 in the Dowd Commons. Contact Amy, Melanie, or Kevin for more information.

Faith In Action, September 16th
The third Sunday of each month, we put our
faith into action. These intergenerational
workshops are designed for everyone to
participate. Each month we will continue to
explore the themes that we encountered during
the Community Meal and develop faith filled
response in our ordinary lives. September's theme is "Welcome."
Book Discussion, September 23rd
Our first book study of the year will be held on
Sunday, September 23rd at 11:30am
in Dowd Commons. We will be discussing the book The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Copies are available for sale through the church office, to borrow in the church Library, or at your local library.

Volunteer Training:
Join us this
Sunday, September 9th at 1:00 pm
in the Activities Room in the Dowd Commons for a brief training on our church's Child and Youth Protection Policy. Any adults who are interested in volunteering with children or youth for the 2018-19 program year are asked to attend. All confirmed Youth Leaders and Music & Ministry volunteers for 2018-19 are required to be up to date on on our CYPP policies and have a Universal Background Check on file. Saturday Tutoring Program
The Saturday Morning Tutoring program will begin September 15. To have another successful year we need your help.
First, we need tutors. We host students from grades 1-12 so tutoring at all levels, and for all subjects, is needed. For those who have tutored before, arrive by 9:45. First timers should arrive at 9 for a brief orientation.
Tutoring runs from 10-12 but we need the tutors and students to arrive early so we can pair them and take full advantage of a 2 hour session. We often have 100 students so everyone is welcome to tutor!
Second, we need Ambassadors. Ambassadors welcome everyone and help direct students, tutors and parents to the appropriate location. Ambassadors also serve juice and doughnuts during the break. They help support the program as needed each Saturday morning. We aim to have at least 2 Ambassadors present every Saturday. Ambassadors arrive by 9:20.
Third, help fulfill the wish list!
The Saturday Tutoring program needs the following items:
- Tablets
- Graphing and Scientific calculators
- Educational games
- Books for all grade levels
These items can be gently used. If you are not able to shop but want to contribute money to help buy the items mentioned, that is appreciated as well.
There is a box in the church office where items can be dropped.

 Join Fairmount Church and the Church of the Covenant in welcoming Burkhard Paetzold, PC(USA) Mission Coworker, and Regional Liaison for Central and Western Europe and Roma. Mr. Paetzold has been a mission partner with both Covenant and Fairmount for several years. He will be presenting on the topic,

Join us for our final workday for this year to help rehab houses through the Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity Apostles Build. This year we are working to rehab a house in the West Park neighborhood on the west side of Cleveland. Make Music with Us: The Covenant music ensembles (choir and handbells) are open to all volunteers seeking an opportunity for musical expression. Church membership is not required for participation. Students are welcome. Rehearsals resume on
