'RICKSHAW' PEDICABS
MAY BE COMING DOWNTOWN
Some local entrepreneurs are looking to bring a "rickshaw" pedicab operation to Downtown Tifton to help ferry customers between businesses and parking areas, the Tifton Merchants Association (TMA) was told Wednesday.
Hal Baxley of 41 and Main restaurant and Will Roberts of Tifton say they have researched the idea and found pedicabs made in China that could be used in Tifton. Roberts said two of the pedicabs could be purchased for a total of about $3,000.
The pedicabs are large three-wheeled pedal cycles that can carry two people. Primarily found in tourist areas, the pedicabs are used in such
cities as Savannah, Charleston, Fort Lauderdale, and Charlotte, and are popular around the world.
The TMA was told the cabs would help with downtown parking issues while adding to Downtown Tifton's atmosphere.
Baxley said advertising could be placed on the cabs, and college students could do the pedaling. He said he is looking for someone to take on the project.
"We're going to make it work," Baxley told the TMA.

TIFT COACH ERIC HOLLAND
NAMED ROME PRINCIPAL
LED BLUE DEVILS TO TWO STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Dr. Eric L. Holland, coach of Tift County High's state championship basketball team, has been named principal of Rome High School. The Rome City Board of Education made the announcement on Tuesday.

Rome School Superintendent Lou Byars said Holland is being hired as principal and not as a coach. At Rome High, Holland joins former TCHS head football Coach John Reid, who is also that school district's athletic director as well as head football coach. Reid led Rome High to the state 5A football title last season -- the school's first state title in any sport.
In recent weeks, Holland was also in the mix for principal at Irwin County High School.
Holland has been assistant principal at Tift County High for eight years and recently became interim principal at the school's Northeast Campus. He has been Tift County's head varsity basketball coach since 2009 and has led the Blue Devils to two state championship titles.
Holland earned a doctorate degree in educational leadership and administration from Capella University in 2009. He received his master's degree at Georgia Southwestern and specialist degree at Albany State.
Tift County School District officials did not respond Thursday to inquiries from the Tifton Grapevine about what's next for the school's basketball program.

TIFT RELAY FOR LIFE
SET FOR APRIL 21
Tift County's Relay For Life,
a community fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, April 21, at Tifton's E.B. Hamilton Complex.
The event
kicks off by celebrating cancer survivors. At about 7:20 p.m., survivors take the first lap around a track as a c
rowd cheers them on.
The solemn l
uminaria ceremony begins at 9 p.m.
Each luminaria bag represents a loved one lost to cancer, brings support to those affected by it and honors survivors. The Relay's closing ceremony will be at 12:30 a.m.
Each year, more than 5,000 Relay For Life events take place around the world.

TIBBETTS GIVES TRAVEL TALK TO ROTARIANS
Travel writer Christine Tibbetts, left, speaks with Rotarian Sandy Bowen after the Tifton Rotary Club's meeting Wednesday. Tibbetts of Tifton noted some of her adventures as a travel writer, such as visiting Jordan twice, and discussed the mechanics of her work.
She said she chooses her destinations in the hope of finding "relevance in the ever-changing world" in which we live. The photo on the stand behind her was taken during her visit to the Sacred Valley of Peru.
The Rotary Club of Tifton meets every Wednesday at noon in the Tiftarea Conference Center beside Applebee's.

NE CAMPUS BAND PERFORMS SPECIAL CONCERT
Teacher
Sheri Wyles' band class gave a special concert recently for
Jakin Tillery's class at Tift County High's
Northeast Campus. The band performed for 25 minutes and included a special song,
"Risk Everything for a Dream," dedicated in memory to
Lottyn Bates, a former classmate. The piece of music was composed by
Richard Saucedo in honor of the organization "United Sound," founded to provide music opportunities for
special needs children.

LEGAL FOOD FRENZY ADDRESSES
LOCAL CHILDHOOD HUNGER
Georgia's
Legal Food Frenzy is being held locally at
10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 22, at Tifton's
Fulwood Park to help needy local children.
The
food and fund drive is sponsored by lawyers and legal officials benefitting Georgia's regional food banks.
Cash donations and non-perishable food items will be accepted to help address childhood hunger in the community.
The Kid's Carnival being held at the park is in conjunction with Georgia Cities Week.
Activities include relay races, face painting, inflatable obstacle course and slide, photo booth, cornhole game, BB gun range, raffles and various emergency vehicles from police and fire departments.
Music will be provided by Beau and Luci, Tanner Strickland and Jen Anders; and snacks will be available.
Organizers say the problem of local hunger in children is real. They say 67 percent of children in local schools are eligible for the free and reduced lunch program and may go without some meals during the summer.

FIFTH ANNUAL BIG LITTLE RIVER
PADDLE RACE LAUNCHES APRIL 29
The fifth annual BIG Little River Paddle Race, a fundraiser for WWALS and Friends of Reed Bingham, will be on
Saturday, April 29.
The WWALS Watershed Coalition advocates for conservation and stewardship of the "Withlacoochee, Willacoochee, Alapaha, Little, and Suwannee River " watersheds in South Georgia and North Florida.
The paddle race has registration between 8-9 a.m., and a mass start at 9:30 a.m. at Red Roberts Landing off
Rountree Bridge Road between Moultrie and Adel -- take I-75 Exit 41 (at Sparks) to Rountree Bridge Road.
Canoes or
kayaks only are allowed, and life jackets required of all participants.
A grilling lunch and silent auction are held after the race.
Last year there were
34 paddlers at the event, which follows a scenic three-mile, downstream stretch of the Little River with winding, flat blackwater and some trees to go around. Alligators and/or snakes may be present. It's flatwater through the South Georgia forest under towering cypress trees, past live oaks, coppices of ogeechee tupelo, and majestic pines.
Paddle it to win or just to enjoy the scenery. Cash prize to the paddler who finishes first. Medals to top finishers in several categories: male and female solo canoe, male and female solo kayak, male two-person canoe, female two-person canoe, mixed two-person canoe, male tandem kayak, female tandem kayak and mixed tandem kayak.
Fastest paddlers will complete in under an hour; slow paddlers in up to two hours. Bring your own boat or rent one from Reed Bingham State Park (advance reservations recommended).

TCHS's RUCKER NAMED OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR
Dr. Julie Rucker, dean of Instruction at Tift County High School, received the Outstanding Educator Award from the ABAC Alumni Association at the Homecoming Awards dinner last Friday at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Named the TCHS Teacher of the Year in 2014, Rucker was selected as the Tift County School System Teacher of the Year in 2015. She also received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Tift County Foundation for

ABAC Alumni President Chuck Scarborough, Rucker, and ABAC President David Bridges.

Educational Excellence in 2008.
Rucker attended ABAC from 1988 to 1989. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Georgia Southern University, her master's degree in English from Valdosta State University and her Ed.D. in curriculum studies from Georgia Southern. She was a DeWitt Wallace Fellow at the Bread Loaf School of English in Vermont and received her educational leadership certification from the University of Georgia.
A member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 2014, Rucker is also a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Georgia Council of Teachers of English. She was co-chair of the recent Tift County Choral Parents Association Peach State Invitational Show Choir Competition.
Rucker has also been involved with the Tift County 4-H Club, the Georgia 4-H, the Tifton Kiwanis Club, the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the Kiwanian of the Year for the Tifton Kiwanis Club in 2007.
Active in many ministries at the First Baptist Church of Tifton, Rucker has been a longtime supporter of the Tift County Relay for Life.
