OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE OF CRE
Honors in the Major

Honors in the Major is an exciting opportunity to distinguish yourself in your post-graduate plans by deep diving into a research or creative problem that fascinates you. Over the course of two to three semesters, you will work closely with faculty from your major to design and execute an independent academic thesis or creative project appropriate for your field. Doing so will help give you a competitive edge when applying to graduate school, professional school, fellowships, or career opportunities. It’s a fun, challenging, and rewarding experience that can build upon previous FSU research experiences you may have completed, like UROP.

You do not need to be a member of the Honors Program to participate in the Honors in the Major program . Admission requirements include:

  • Must be a current FSU student
  • Must be formally accepted into your major
  • Must have a 3.2 GPA (FSU and Cumulative)
  • Must have at least 60 completed college credits
  • Must have at least 12 completed FSU credits
  • Must have at least two semesters remaining until graduation

To learn more about Honors in the Major . Also, consider attending an information session and Q&A given by Dr. Michael David Franklin, Honors faculty:

Thursday, October 24, from 12 noon to 1 pm in HSF Great Hall.

This non-credit workshop trains FSU faculty, staff, and students to conduct underwater research in accordance with the standards of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS). It is available exclusively to those with research applications. This experience is for students who are currently working on a research project. Scholarships available.

Questions? Visit the FSU Academic Diving Program website , or contact the Diving Safety Officer directly at fsucml-dso@fsu.edu or by calling (850) 697-2078.

STAFF
SPOTLIGHT
Alex Oldham
Graduate Assistant, M.S. Candidate in Sports Psychology

Alex Oldham, a Kentucky native, is currently in her second year in the Sport Psychology Master’s program here at FSU. She found her passion for this field during her time as an undergrad, researching various elements of the psychology of motivation in athletic and academic contexts at Western Kentucky University.

Alex spent her summer interning for a counseling and mental performance private practice in Annapolis, MD. There, she had the opportunity to get applied experience as a mental performance consultant, wrote articles for her supervisor’s blog, and learned the in’s and out’s of integrating mental skills services with physical training and other holistic care providers. One day, Alex would love to work for a high school level sports organization or tactical athlete populations (military or police force), and dreams of working for the NFL.

Fun fact: Alex’s hometown is where all Corvettes are made, and she is very proud of her Kentuckian roots!
STUDENT
SPOTLIGHT
Aquesha Addison
FGLSAMP President, UROP Leader, IDEA Grant recipient

Aquesha Addison is in her final year of Biological Sciences and has been involved in various ways on and off campus since her freshman year. Upon graduation, she would like to pursue a M.S. in Biomedical Science and then an M.D. Her career goal is to bridge the gap between medical research and patient care in the hospital setting.

Aquesha has been conducting research under Dr. Timothy Megraw at the College of Medicine since her first year at FSU. Her current project focuses on the mechanism of Flavivirus infection and the effects of Zika Virus on cell division and function. With the aid of several CRE opportunities, she have been able to share her experiences with other students as well as present her work a few times at various conferences.

Her first presentation was at the Florida Undergraduate Research Conference at UNF last February. The experience made her more comfortable talking about her work to those outside her field. She continued with UROP to present at the 2019 Spring Symposium, and she is currently preparing to present on October 1st at the President's Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence to share her IDEA Grant research. Aquesha has also continued her CRE involvement by becoming a UROP leader for the 2019-2020 school year.
ALUMNI
SPOTLIGHT
Briana Whitehead
UROP Leader, Global Scholar, FGLSAMP member

Briana Whitehead is in her first year of a PhD program in Molecular Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University. She is studying protein sequencing and folding using different computational, biophysical, and chemical methods. Hear from Briana in her own words!

"I think my [PhD] program is absolutely amazing. They care so much about each student's individual success, and there is a plethora of resources for everyone in the program. I also like that my program is not really big like many strictly interdisciplinary programs, so everyone ends up knowing everyone, increasing the community involvement and friendliness. The different research that goes on here is incredible, and many of the labs are at the forefront of their work and also technological design and method development.

Without the CRE, I don't think I ever would have realized what it meant to be a researcher, and I would have never fallen in love with it. I went into FSU wanting to go to medical school, but after my involvement with UROP my sophomore year I changed trajectories and decided to go to graduate school to continue increasing my laboratory skills and learning to think critically about the questions that interest me the most. I have also had much involvement with different people and different cultures throughout my doctoral journey, and being able to handle situations or conversations with the utmost respect for the individual and their opinions and ideas is also something that I believe the Global Scholars program has embedded in me, which I am very grateful for."
