FEATURED EVENT: First Day of School
School began today for most of our students and the halls are buzzing with excitement! Students were surprised and excited to come back and see things like new playgrounds, modular buildings, parent/bus drop-off areas, and flexible classroom furniture as a result of our summer bond work; and of course they were also happy to see their friends and teachers. Click here to see a gallery of pictures from the morning. This gallery will be updated throughout the week.

Academic Seminar Reminder
Wednesday, Sept. 5, is our first Academic Seminar of the year. Occurring each Wednesday, Academic Seminar provides important time for staff to collaborate and engage in professional development. On these days, middle and high schools start their day 30 minutes later than normal and elementary schools end their day 30 minutes earlier than normal.

Budget and Citizens' Curriculum Advisory Committee Opportunities
HSD is currently accepting applications for the Budget Committee and the   Citizens' Curriculum Advisory Committee (CCAC) . To learn more about each opportunity, please visit our website . Application deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Bus Service Delay Reminder
Please note that due to a national shortage of bus drivers, there may be   delays and disruptions to normal bus service .
High School Football Game Safety Protocols
As we mentioned in last week's Hot News, our high schools are implementing new entrance protocols for football games and other ticketed events. Students will no longer be able to bring in backpacks or large bags, outside food and beverages (empty water bottles are allowed), or bicycles, scooters, or skateboards. In addition, students in middle and high school must show their school-issued ID cards. Your assistance in communicating and reinforcing these guidelines is much appreciated. Additional information is on the Athletic and Activities page of our website.

Bilingual Summer Programs
For many years, the Hillsboro School District has offered  Migrant and Dual Language summer programs to students who can benefit from that extended school year experience. This summer, more than 900 students participated in the programs, which ran throughout July.

Mariachi STEAM Camp
In late July, sixteen Hillsboro students and two graduates (as counselors) attended a week-long camp where, besides performing and learning the art and history of Mariachi music, students also engaged in a variety of STEAM activities.

Bond Update

This summer, over 40 projects around the district have been completed or are near completion. The most visible projects are: Reedville Elementary's main building renovations and new annex; Glencoe High's multi-use turf field and lights; Hilhi's multi-use turf field, track and lights; new parent/bus dropoff areas at four elementary schools; and new play areas at five elementary schools. What happened at your school or building? What's coming? Find out at hillsboro-bond.org.

Please Drive Safely Around Schools

With schools re-opening, drivers need to be especially vigilant for pedestrians before and after school hours. Here are eight important things to remember in school zones: 1) Recognize school zones; 2) Reduce speed; 3) Expect increased traffic; 4) Be aware of pedestrians; 5) Watch for buses; 6) Obey crossing guards; 7) Learn about new drop-areas at Ladd Acres, Eastwood, McKinney and Reedville; and 8) Fines are severe for breaking traffic laws. Click here to view more details about these important reminders.

All staff must either enroll or opt out of benefits for the Oct. 1, 2018, through Sept. 30, 2019, plan year by Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2018. See the Benefits page under Staff Resources for additional information.
