Dear Friends and Members of Ark and Dove,
The school year has arrived and, on Tuesday, Anne Arundel County public schools officially begin. Presbyterians in the United States have historically supported public schools and PTA's and shied away from private schools because we believe an educated citizenry is essential to democracy and the well being of the community. This stance is partially rooted in the notion of John Calvin that Christians can and should love God with their minds as well as their hearts. There do seem to be many places in the country where large swaths of private schools lead to the decline of public education. Due to inadequate funding of public schools some parents choose private schools to meet the needs of their children. I do not fault parents for making these tough decisions, but I do wish that our public schools were so spectacular that every parent would want their children there.
This Sunday we will offer prayers for educators, support staff and students in the morning prayer. And next Sunday we launch Sunday School. We have some great teachers lined up, but Elder Laura Rockwell tells me we still need a few more. Perhaps you feel called to lead children closer to God using both heart and mind.

First Christian Church in Annapolis. We may well be officially named AACT,
Anne Arundel Coming Together. We will keep you posted.

The coming of the school year brings us into an exciting time. LOGOS is on the horizon and also band and choir rehearsals begin. The first band rehearsal will take place on
September 4th at 7 pm in the sanctuary and will continue every Tuesday at that same time. The band has some very nice anthems planned, and we welcome any volunteers who have an interest in singing or playing an instrument. Don’t know how to sing or play an instrument? No problem because you can learn with us! Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.

“Understanding the New Testament” Course
|
Professor Michael Gorman of St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Baltimore, and a member of Community United Methodist Church in Crofton, will be offering a free course called “Understanding the New Testament” on Monday evenings this fall. Several area churches will be participating. The class will meet at First Baptist Church of Crofton, 1690 Crofton Parkway, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. September 17 to November 12, 2018. The class will be a combination of presentation and discussion. It will focus on the historical context of the New Testament and on the unique message about Jesus and discipleship found in each New Testament writing. Introducing the New Testament: A Historical, Literary, and Theological Survey, 2
nd edition. Michael Gorman is the author of a dozen books, and he has lectured and taught throughout the country and abroad. For further information or to register:

Winter Relief: October 15 through October 22

If any of your kin fall into difficulty and become dependent on you, you shall support them; they shall live with you as though resident aliens. Do not take interest in advance or otherwise make a profit from them, let them live with you. - Leviticus 25:35-36
God calls us to take care of each other. We will be hosting Winter Relief October 15th - 22nd. What is Winter Relief? Through an all-volunteer effort, Winter Relief has operated as a seasonal Emergency Temporary Shelter since 1992. Hosted at different Anne Arundel County religious facilities each week, from late October through April, the shelter is a safe and comfortable refuge for those experiencing homelessness throughout the coldest months of the year. Each facility provides services, meals and spiritual guidance to the guests during their designated week. It is a unique opportunity for people in the community to reach out and share their blessings with those less fortunate. There will be many opportunities to help. Sign-ups will be in the lobby starting September 2nd. Please consider signing up to show these 25 men hospitality and the love of God!
