MAKING SENSE OF SKILLS BASED HIRING

Towards Employment works to connect people to good jobs, and companies with workers with the right skills.  But what are the right skills and how do you assess them?  What kinds of assessments measure softskills vs technical skills?  Which ones lead to a credential and what does that communicate to an employer about a candidate's fit for an open position?  TE and partners helped pilot a skills-based hiring initiative that provided access to an assessment resulting in skill scores that could then be matched with the requirements of open jobs. This pilot tested one of many skills-based assessments.

Grace Heffernan, senior project manager, draws on our experience with TalentNEO  and  makes sense of the variety of skills-based assessments in her recent blog.

WE CHOOSE EXTRAORDINARY!

This February, The Fund for Our Economic Future published  Two Tomorrows  and asked us all to make a choice for our future.

Do we want Northeast Ohio's future to be just average ... or extraordinary?

At Towards Employment, we emphatically choose EXTRAORDINARY, and are vigorously working to refine our strategy and programming to ensure we are maximizing our contribution to achieving this outcome.

Join The Fund for Our Economic Future on Friday, September 7th for a conversation before the Friday Forum at The City Club about the Two Tomorrows Report. Register for the conversation here

TE ALUMNI NETWORK

This past month, we launched Towards Employment's Alumni Network. On Saturday, August 18, 50 graduates and friends showed up to learn about the potential of the network. We also acknowledged and celebrated Bloom staff members  moving on to new employment opportunities!

10 people pledged to vote this coming November, one person registered to vote when he learned that his felony did not preclude him from voting in Ohio, and we distributed many items from our clothing closet.  The highlight was the raffling off of tickets to a pre-season Brown's game, tickets donated by the Cleveland Browns.

The TE Alumni Network has several goals:
  • new participant referral
  • sharing community resources and success stories
  • and encouraging graduates to take advantage of advancement opportunities and new programming at TE.
Next up is an alumni newsletter that will be released this month. Feedback from graduates and staff will make this network extra special. For more information, contact Bishara Addison at  [email protected]
