SE Spokane County Fair Parade Highlights
|
|
What a beautiful day for a Parade! Last Saturday, a group of Lilac members, including Directors, Volunteers and Royalty, walked the streets of downtown Rockford, WA for the annual SE Spokane County Fair parade. It was the last opportunity for our 2019 'We Are Spokane' float, in all its glory, to carry our beautiful 2019 princesses and team walking along side of it.
We have enjoyed traveling not only within our local community but all around the region highlighting the Lilac City and our Festival. We are already looking forward to next year! The first community parade that we will participate in will be the St. Patrick's parade in downtown Spokane on March 14th, 2020. Keep an eye out in late winter/early spring for a full list of parades and festivals we will be attending next year.

Shelley is taking on the VP Area Relations position for the second year in a row!
Shelley was born and raised in the Spokane Valley and has lived here most of her life!
She has been in the medical field since 1982, spending the last 30 years in the air medical industry. She is currently employed full time with AeroMD, an air ambulance program based in the U. S. Virgin Islands. Luckily, she has the option of working from home most of the time.
She enjoys spending time with her family, including her two grandchildren. She also loves boating on the lake. If she is not working, she can be found creating in her sewing room, as she has been an avid quilter for many years.
Shelley became involved with Lilac when her granddaughter was selected as a Jr. Princess. She has worked on several of the committees within Lilac over the past 7 years. She loves giving back to her community, empowering our youth and supporting our military, as her son-in-law is active duty.
As a teenager, Shelley was involved in her high school band and has great memories of marching in the then “Torchlight Parade!” It was the highlight of her spring school year. Shelley has said she never imagined that so many years later she would have the opportunity to work with and support that same association.
As a VP of Area Relations, Shelley has made a commitment to support the Association and our community with participation in area events. Her position is to provide information to our membership regarding Community Events and area parades in which our Association can be showcased. She is also our ambassador for the Northwest Festival Hosting Group. To learn more about the NWFHG, keep reading Lilac Weekly!
Community awareness is vital to keeping the legacy of Lilac alive for many years to come and we are so lucky and honored to have Shelley as a fantastic member for so many years and as a fantastic leader! Thank you Shelley!

This past weekend, three of our Royalty members were able to take part in our final community parade that we bring our "We Are Spokane" Royalty team and float to in 2019. Princesses Grace, Lilian and Makayla took their places on the beautiful float one more time and strolled down the streets of Rockford, WA with pride.
It has been an honor to watch these young women grow over the past nine months. They have been amazing ambassadors for our Festival and community. The Court had the opportunity to give back by volunteering at over 25 community projects and charities. Before Coronation, the Candidates and Court received over 10 training sessions ranging from self defense to speech preparation and delivery. Although they will be our reigning court until March of 2020, we want to wish all of our Royalty members the best of luck at each of their chosen colleges and the next exciting chapter of their lives.
Our 2020 Royalty Orientations are quickly approaching in November. See below for meeting dates. We encourage all high school senior women interested in the program to
visit our website.
School coordinators are now able to complete the Intent to Participate form online. This form's purpose is to give our VP's of Royalty a confirmation that a particular school intends to submit a Candidate for the Lilac Royalty program. If you are your schools' coordinator or can pass a long the message to them, please share with them the
website link.
We can not wait to start meeting the up and coming young leaders of Spokane that we hope to get to know more and to eventually become our 2020 "Destination Spokane" Royal Court.

This weekend, the Autumn Leaf Festival in Leavenworth, WA, marks the final festival for the 2019 Northwest Festival Hosting Group season. It has been such a wonderful year where many of our members have traveled the region to be involved or spectate. Our 2019 President, Kristy Hamby, has had the honor of attending all 8 of the other Festivals that are part of the Northwest Festival Hosting Group (NWFHG).
What is the Northwest Festival Hosting Group?
The NWFHG was formed in 1981 at the suggestion of Wenatchee Applarian Vice Chancellor, Larry Frack. He suggested that festival hosting groups around the Northwest should get together to discuss problems and share ideas. The first meeting was held in Seattle at the Camlin Hotel and the main topics discussed were: (1) Packet prices; (2) recognition and acknowledgements; (3) housing; (4) transportation to and from events. The meeting was felt to be very helpful and it was decided from then on to continue meeting once a year as well as make the commitment to attend each others festivals as much as possible. The group has never been a dues-paying organization.
The Spokane Lilac Festival is a proud member of the Northwest Festival Hosting Group with the following festivals. Click on the festival link to find out more about each one. We encourage you to visit as many of these festivals as possible as they are wonderful organizations that continue to honor and highlight their communities.
