Update from the Executive Director

Hello everyone. I have really been enjoying the changing colors of the leaves this fall. Although the leaves are dying and returning to the Earth, we are confident they will return anew in the spring. I hope this autumn is treating you well!

I continue to learn about our community and the many organizations committed to helping all of us age vibrantly and in place. I would like to highlight a few of them over the next several weeks. First up is East Side Neighborhood Services, where Linnea Tweed gave me a tour of their beautiful space and a taste of all that they do for and with the community. Although they serve children, families, and the community, some of their programs are targeted for older adults. I thought you might be interested in their Reimagining Aging Book Club and their varied wellness programs (chair yoga, tai ji quan, and vital fitness). Check out their complete calendar here

The Mill City Commons November calendar has been posted and is open for registration. We are celebrating a wonderful month of programming in September with our highest attendance so far this year. October is on track to perhaps match or beat September; we'll see! Read on and sign up for Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, The Rise of Populism in Europe, a Best Buy focus group, and of course, a Sunday Soiree and Last Tuesday Happy Hour. We've also got Meditation Circle, River Walkers, and Men's Coffee and Conversation and Women Connect. And more!

Have you bought any Halloween candy yet? It's almost trick-or-treating time...

MILL CITY COMMONS: We learn. We share. We engage. We give.

Current Events: A Conversation with Bill
Wednesday, October 16, 10:30 - 11:30 am
Winslow House Party Room, 100 2nd St SE
Current international news and U.S. foreign policy provide an endless trove of topics for learning and discussion. Retired foreign service officer and MCC member Bill Davnie will identify a topic in advance, although news can always lead us in a fresh direction. In this month's session, Bill will lead a conversation about Afghanistan. Should we stay or go? What aspects of a settlement do you consider critical? Come with your thoughts and views. Bill also will talk a bit about his former colleague, Ambassador Masha Yovanovitch, who was serving in Ukraine until May of this year.

This ongoing program is held on the third Wednesday of the month. Topic ideas for each monthly gathering are welcome.

Great Decisions: The Rise of Populism in Europe
Monday, October 21, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
DeLaSalle High School, 1 DeLaSalle Dr, Room D104
Mass migration, and the problems associated with it, have directly abetted the rise of populist parties in Europe. Opposition to immigration was the prime driver of support for Brexit, it brought a far-right party to the German Bundestag for the first time since the 1950s and it propelled Marine Le Pen to win a third of the vote in the French presidential election. In addition to calling for stronger borders, however, these parties are invariably illiberal, anti-American, anti-NATO and pro-Kremlin, making their rise a matter of serious concern for the national security interests of the United States. Speaker Tom Hanson is a foreign policy consultant and former career U.S. Foreign Service Officer. Currently, he serves as program secretary of the St. Paul-Minneapolis Committee on Foreign Relations, advisor to Global Minnesota's Great Decisions program and Diplomat in Residence at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

Registration on the MCC website is required for Great Decisions members. Sorry, not open to guests. To join the MCC Great Decisions Discussion Group, email Betsy Wray at [email protected].
