The Pioneer Express!
ORHS
Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Friday, November 1, 2019

The first quarter has ended and the second quarter has begun! In fact, today we already wrap up week #2 of the second quarter. Report cards went home on Tuesday, October 29th. If you did not see your student's report card, please ask them for it. Please talk with your student about their report card and grades. If your student is struggling, we have many services available to assist them including an excellent tutoring program. These weeks are passing so quickly so the time to take positive corrective steps is sooner vs. later.

Tomorrow morning Oak Ridge High School has the privilege of hosting one of OCPS' Parent Academy events (details just below). There are only a few of these all year and they are very well done. Saturday's event is titled "This is US: Our Family, Our School, Our Community." Please, if you are a member of our Oak Ridge school community make every effort to attend. I promise you that you will not be disappointed and will be very happy with the time invested once it is over.

Enjoy the cooler weather this weekend and don't forget to set your clocks back 1 hour on Sunday as Daylight Savings Time ends.

With Pioneer Pride,

Ms. Jennifer Bellinger
Principal

School Start Times Survey
It's not too late - take the survey - let your opinion be heard.

The OCPS School Board wants your input on school start times. This site includes a summary of how bus routes are created & four cost-neutral start time models developed for consideration.

Please take the survey and share your thoughts!

College & Career Center
Over 50 of our Seniors took a college tour to visit Florida State University and FAMU in Tallahassee.

FSU is one of the nation's elite research universities, Florida State University preserves, expands, and disseminates knowledge in the sciences, technology, arts, humanities, and professions, while embracing a philosophy of learning strongly rooted in the traditions of the liberal arts and critical thinking.

FAMU's academic achievements are what set it apart as a unique learning experience. In 2014, FAMU was recognized among the 2014 U.S. News & World Report's "Best National Universities." The U.S. News & World Report lists FAMU as the top public historically black college or university in the nation for 2015. It is also listed among The Princeton Review's "Best in the Southeast" colleges and is one of the top picks for providing a high quality education at an affordable price in Florida.

Women in Motion

Students at Oak Ridge High School got a special pre-release screening of the new documentary, Woman in Motion, about Nichell Nicholas' (above left) recruitment of woman and minorities to NASA. Her four-month campaign attracted 8,000 recruits! The director of the film, Todd Thompson, was on hand for Q & A with the students following the screening.

In 1977, with just four months left, NASA struggles to recruit scientists, engineers and astronauts for their new Space Shuttle Program. That is when Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek's Lt. Uhura, challenges them by asking the question: Where are my people? She embarks on a national blitz, recruiting 8,000 of the nation's best and brightest, including the trailblazing astronauts who became the first African American, Asian and Latino men and women to fly in space.

Welcome to the Pioneer Family!

Positive Interaction with Law Enforcement
Thank you Deputy Febo for taking the time to speak with our brothers about how to positively interact with the police! This session was eye opening and informative.  #noexcuses #makeithappen #ittakesavillage #BuildingCharacter

Fall 2019 South Florida College Tour
The NEMP College Tour was an amazing experience for our brothers! We visited the University of Miami, Florida International University, and Florida Atlantic University (pictured in that order just below)! We had the opportunity to visit dorm rooms and talk to current college students about what to expect once you arrive on campus as a new student.

Also, thank you to Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon for sharing a few encouraging words with us! Do not make excuses, just make it happen!
