News From St. Sarkis Church

The monsoon rains that recently hit India were centered in the region of Kerala, which is the home of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church. Many areas have been devastated with the flooding that has caused loss of life, disease, and massive property damage. In solidarity with a sister church, Archbishop Oshagan has directed Prelacy parishes to offer a special prayer for victims in Kerala, India this Sunday, August 26, as well as a separate plate collection for flood relief.

Salt & Light Youth Group and A.Y.F. Hyortik Juniors. by Nyrie Bedrossian
"On Tuesday, August 21st, St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group and AYF Hyortik Juniors had their first joint social at SkyZone Trampoline Park in Deer Park. The event was a huge success, with over 50 youth attending from both organizations.
The participants enjoyed socializing together during the event, which included jump time at the trampoline park, followed by pizza and cake for all who attended.
This was a joint summer social for both organizations and gave an opportunity for the youth to see each other before the Fall when their respective sessions and meetings will start up again.
There were many smiling, happy faces all around as the kids enjoyed reuniting with their friends.
We would like to thank the organizers and participants for making this event a success, and wish both Salt & Light Youth Group and AYF Hyortik the best of luck in the Fall as their meetings start up again."

Marathon to Benefit Gavar Special School for Children With Disabilities
This f all, attorney and avid jogger Anahid Ugurlayan will be running the Hamptons Marathon to raise money to benefit Gavar Special School for children with both physical and mental disabilities.
Over the past decade, Anahid has dedicated each of her marathons to raising money for a charity, both Armenian and non-Armenian. This will be the fourth she's run to benefit FAR. It will also be her final marathon.
"I am proud to run my 10th marathon for FAR. My love and admiration for FAR began during my Young Professionals Trip to Armenia in 2002," said Anahid. "The proceeds of the run will benefit a new project, specifically the renovations to a wing of the school that will be dedicated as a trade and vocational space for older students so that they can be self-sufficient upon graduation."

THE SECOND EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS (1.1-11)
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
To the church of God in Corinth, together with all the saints throughout Achaia:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MARK (4.35-41)
That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.

A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"

They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

Liturgical Calendar
FEAST OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE BELT OF THE THEOTOKOS
We can only imagine the joy of finding possessions of the Holy Mother. This Sunday, August 26, the second Sunday after Assumption, is the feast of the Discovery of the Belt of the Theotokos. Because there are no relics of the Holy Mother's earthly body (she was assumed into Heaven), her personal belongings became the object of devotion and veneration. During the time of the early Church, when Christians were persecuted, her possessions were kept hidden and secret. Her belt was the first item to be discovered in Jerusalem in the fifth century. This discovery is the basis for one of the eight feast days in the Armenian liturgical calendar devoted to the Holy Mother.

HOLY PROPHETS EZEKIEL, EZRA AND ZECHARIAH
OnTuesday, August 28, the Armenian Church commemorates the Holy Prophets Ezekiel, Ezra, and Zechariah, father of John the Baptist. Ezekielprophesied for about 28 years. The Book of Ezekiel, composed of 48 chapters, is ranked third among the great prophets. It is full of rich imagery, prophetic visions, and allegories. Ezra was a learned and pious priest in Babylon. The Book of Ezra describes the return to Zion following the Babylonian captivity.Zechariah, is the father of John the Baptist. He was married to Elizabeth, and John was born to them in their old age. The promise of a son was conveyed to Zechariah by an angel.

ST. JOHN THE FORERUNNER AND JOB THE RIGHTEOUS
On Thursday, August 30, the Armenian Church commemorates St. John the Forerunner and Job the Righteous. St. John the Forerunner, also known as John the Baptist (Hovhaness Mkrtich), is an important figure in the Gospels. He is recognized as the "forerunner" (Garapet) to the Messiah. He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea. At the age of 30 he began to preach against the evils of the times and called for penance and baptism because "the kingdom of heaven is close at hand."
Job is a good and righteous person who experiences and endures catastrophe after catastrophe. Thus, the phrase "the patience of Job" has entered the English lexicon as a popular cliché. The Book of Job is one of the five books classified as the "poetical books" of the Bible. The central theme is the mystery of suffering. Ultimately, Job is rewarded because "the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning," and "After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his children, and his children's children, four generations. And Job died, old and full of days." (Job, Chapter 42).

Also remembered this week are the following saints:
The Holy Apostle Thomas, Monday, August 27.
