A UN Summit: Disasters Contribute to Migrant Crisis

The UN Summit on Refugees and Migrants occurred earlier this week in New York, in response to the refugee crisis that has left 60 million people displaced around the world. Participating governments emerged from the meeting with an unprecedented declaration that emphasizes the role of environmental degradation, climate change and natural disasters in the ongoing global migrant crisis. The "New York Declaration," is a sign of a turning point in governmental response to the migrant crisis, and it contains commitments to discover the root causes of the crisis and create sustainable, humane solutions to the issues that migrants and refugees face.

BDanish Institute for Human Rights Review of the SDGs

The Danish Institute of Human Rights recently published a paper reviewing the importance of human rights in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs. The Institute have reviewed the Agenda through the lens of their extensive experience in human rights monitoring and have arrived to the conclusion that, "t he paper  argues that incorporating human rights principles and mechanisms into the Follow-up and Review of the 2030 Agenda will be crucial to realize the Goals and the commitment to 'leave no one behind'." The authors also argue that this contribution will increase the coherence and understanding of the Agenda as a whole.

The paper is now available in French, Spanish and English and can be found here.
