64 SECONDS to Learn Up To  25 THINGS about St. Louis Park High School
September 27, 2019

1:   From the Principal

Hard to believe we are wrapping up September already.  Students have been working hard to adjust to their new schedules and class projects and tests are starting to become common experiences.  I appreciated the examples of "E"xcellence that I witnessed in classes this week.  In Mr. Opara's math class I saw students receiving specific feedback from their teacher as they prepared for an upcoming exam.  In Mrs. Scroggins' advisory I saw students asking questions to prepare for their journey after High School.  I appreciate the efforts of these teachers to help realize Park Pride.

Our 9th Graders started exploring their individual "E"xcellence as they participated in a Strength Finders Training in their advisory.  We are hopeful that a better awareness of our strengths (as teachers and students) will help us realize success in our classes and our future.

Principal
2:    West Metro All Conference Music Event
Orchestra
Band
Choir
On Tuesday, September 24th, 31 of the top music students at SLPHS traveled to Chanhassen High School for the West Metro Conference All-Conference Band/Orchestra/Choir events. Students worked for about five hours with collegiate music faculty and one hour with a section coach before putting on a concert at 5pm. It is very impressive that the fourth week of school, and after so little rehearsal time, each group played at a very high level.

The Choir was conducted by Bret Amundson from St. Scholastica in Duluth, the Orchestra was conducted by Rafael Rodriguez from Augsburg College and the Band was conducted by Richard Heidel from the University of Iowa. The SLPHS music staff is proud to have challenged our top students and hopes that they will bring back knowledge, skills and attitudes that will help their ensembles at Park.

3:    Nobel Conference 55 - Climate Changed: Facing Our Future

Kayla Ignatowitz, Samantha Klepfer, Ava Tronson, Marta Hill, Maggie Klaers, Meredith Reise, and Liz Hodges attended the Nobel Conference 55 - Climate Changed: Facing Our Future at Gustavus Adolphus College.  The students heard from top scientists from around the world.  The students and teacher, Al Wachutka, spent the day in lectures and small group discussions.
4:    High School Schedule Task Force
On Wednesday September 25th, The High School Schedule Task Force met for the first of  a series of four meetings to reassess how our high school schedule meets students needs.  The focus of this group will be to provide a recommended schedule structure that will better meet the social/developmental needs for students, while also allowing time for staff collaboration.

This work will include recommendations for staff collaboration time, student intervention and enrichment time, lunches, advisory times, blocks, diploma programs (IB), classes with college credits (AP), etc. Extensive research, best practices and input from stakeholders will inform the work.

The group also developed group norms and protocols, examined the current schedule reality and identified topics for additional research prior to Meeting #2.  The second meeting will take place on October 9th.

More information will be provided via this newsletter or the High School website.
