Western culture's long-standing commitment to a binary understanding of gender limits all humans. We will explore questions of gender and how to bring healing to others and ourselves. Rev. Lara served as the DRE at CUUC from 2003-2012 and is now minister at First Parish UU Church of Kennebunk, ME. CB (Cindy) Beal served 16 years as the DRE at the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence, MA.

Rev. Dr. Nathan C. Walker
Drawing upon scientific studies of happiness, Rev. Walker proposes a series of mindfulness practices to free the mind - including banishing imaginary adversaries from your shower. Rev. Walker was the ministerial intern at CUUC in 2005-2006, and is currently the community minister for religion and public life at the Church of the Larger Fellowship.

Fall Junior Youth Retreat
Metro New York Fall Junior Youth Retreat, Fri Sep 15 - Sat Sep 16, Camp Herrlich, Patterson, NY
Registration is open for the MNY Fall Junior Youth Retreat for 6, 7, 8, and 9th grade youth. This religious education event includes worship, small and large group discussions, and activities that lift up our UU values. Registration closes Tue Sep 4, Labor Day. Come enjoy your coffee hour in Fellowship Hall as you talk to team members, then find where you would like to share your talent and energy. Our mission calls us to "engage in service to transform ourselves and our world." Our goal at CUUC is for all members to at least have their names on the email list of one team. Our wish is that we all grow to become "social justice warriors" being a force for good and acting to make a difference!

The DRE Search Committee and the Board of Trustees of CUUC are happy to announce the appointment of Michele Rinaldi in the new role of Coordinator of Religious Education (CRE). Michele has previously served as an administrator in human services, a director of an animal welfare shelter, a school administrator, and a special education teacher. Michele's position as CRE is 3/4 time. She started work with us on August 14. We are also happy to announce that our former Director of Religious Education, Perry Montrose, will be assuming a new quarter-time role as Director of Faith Development (DFD). We look forward to Perry's continuing his involvement as DFD as part of our RE program transition. The DRE Search Committee will continue to review the structure of the RE program with the goal of developing a program that fits the needs of CUUC, and will begin a search for RE leaders for the 2019-2020 year.

Our Summer Services in air-conditioned Fellowship Hall are led by guest ministers and members and friends of CUUC. The nursery is staffed for young children, and light refreshments and conversation are offered after service. Regular services return to the sanctuary and religious education classes begin again Sun Sep 9. Join us!

The First Unitarian Society in Hastings-on-Hudson is looking for a part-time teacher to lead children's Religious Exploration classes and children's worship, modeling our Unitarian Universalist Principles and values. Must be able to make a minimum three year commitment, September through June. The 2018-19 year responsibilities will include leading eight (8) elementary Our Whole Lives classes and six (6) children's worship services on Sunday mornings. In addition, there will be six (6) Sunday afternoon children's classes or activities. $50/class or children's worship. Training for the elementary Our Whole Lives curriculum is August 24-26 in White Plains, and will be paid for by the congregation. "Your Voice is Your Vote" Two-Part Workshop to Increase Voter Turnout, Thu Sep 20 & Thu Sep 27, 7:00-9:00 PM, Theodore Young Community Center, 32 Manhattan Avenue, White Plains
The nonprofit group Civic Engagement Table, in partnership with Citizen Action of NY, will facilitate a two-part voter turnout workshop designed to reach discouraged and disaffected voters and to build a sense of empowerment in order to increase voter turnout. Share the Plate for July & August: Unirondack & Rowe Camps
This summer we share half our non-pledge collection with the camps at Unirondack and Rowe, both members of the Unitarian Universalist Association Alliance of Camps and Conference Centers (
uuaccc.org
).
We will support the Unirondack Campership Program and Rowe Center's Woodside Scholarship Fund, which seek to make their UU camp experiences available to every child and youth, and to promote economic diversity in their camp programs. Learn more

From the Minister / This what CUUC exsts for: to carry out its mission -- to nurture each other in our spiritual journeys; foster compassion and understanding within and beyond our community, and engage in service to transform ourselves and our world. Spirituality, compassion, and service.
These aren't three things, but just one thing. To foster compassion and understanding requires both nurturing our spirituality and serving others. To nurture each other in our spiritual journeys requires both fostering compassion and understanding and engaging together in service to the wider world. To truly serve others requires spiritual maturity, compassion, and understanding.
The work of our SJTs -- Social Justice Teams -- both flows from our spiritual depth, and flows back to strengthen and support our spiritual development. Social justice work is spiritual practice. And spiritual practice increases our interest in social justice work.
We are starting our 4th year of Social Justice Teams, and we have more of them than ever: Animal Advocacy, Economic Justice, Environmental Practices, Hunger and Homelessness, LGBTQIA Justice, Racial Justice, Refugee Resettlement, Women's Issues. Those eight are described on our webpage HERE. In addition, we have two more new ones that, as of this writing, aren't mentioned on our webpage yet: Gun control (contact Emily Economou) and Children's Issues (contact Terry Kung). That's ten SJTs!
Each SJT has:
- one chair, or two co-chairs;
- five core leaders (the chair plus four others, or the two co-chairs plus three others)
- active members
- "on-call" members (no commitment to come to any meetings, but willing to be called upon when there's a big project that needs as many people as possible)
Some of our SJTs are looking for another core leader or two. Can you step up?
All of our SJTs welcome more active members. Which issue most calls to you as how you'd like to serve?
And if you just aren't able to be an active member, I hope you'll put yourself on the "on call" list for one or two of our SJTs.
Nurture your spirit . . . by helping to heal our world.
