"Leaving a Lasting Legacy"

This Sunday
This Sunday we examine legacy. Not some legacy left behind by someone rich or famous, but our own legacy. We seldom seem to ask the question about what we hope to leave behind. I think part of why we don't talk that way is because we don't want to face our own death. But death is coming for all of us, and wouldn't it be a wonderful gift to think about, plan for, take steps toward your legacy. Jesus certainly talked about his, particularly as the day was approaching. So, what is it that we hope to leave behind once we're gone? Is there some lasting impression, some gift for humanity, some cultural shift, or some family inheritance? And by inheritance I don't necessarily mean money or things. Sometimes the most significant legacies are our children, our shared thoughts, and our love shared openly. Sometimes our legacies are the actions we chose to take while living, often courageous or transformative. Sometimes our legacies are the words of encouragement we offered to others.   And tragically, sometimes are legacies are more unhealthy and negative. What's interesting about legacies is that what we leave behind is up to us. So let's explore that this Sunday, as Laura and I share a few of our hopes for our own legacies. To prepare please read Psalm 71:15 - 24a.

PASTOR'S BLOG
Pastor's Blog
Rev. Brad Beeman

Friends, it's been a long time since I've had to share news about staff and potential staff changes.  In as much as some of those times have been centered on potentially negative things, this time there are some positive things that have happened in the lives of some of our staff that have forced either a change or a departure.  Here's what's happening.

As many of you are aware, Hanae Straub, is leaving her position as second service choir director.  The growth of Hanae and her husband Nathan's music business has made it just too challenging to continue her role at Aldersgate; add to that the fact that they are first time parents.  Her last Sunday with us will be the  Sunday  of Labor Day weekend.  Please come and say goodbye to her as we thank her for her bright, shining, wonderful, spirit-filled presence as she lead the choir and sung solos.   In the interim, as we search for her replacement, Jason Suchan will be taking on both roles, as choir director and organist / accompanist.  A search committee has been formed out of the Core Leadership Team and with Hanae and Jason's help, will begin to look for our next choir director.

Second, Dave Carver's construction business has grown, and grown quickly.  Dave no longer has the time to work as our facilities manager.  Dave, being Dave,  has offered his maintenance services as a member of the church, now as a volunteer.  What he doesn't have time for is the property upkeep.  We're hoping to find volunteers to mow, cut, trim, weed, etc. in the interim as we search for his replacement.

Finally, at least for today, because of our financial situation, we've had to move Pastor Laura's position to 1/4 time. What this means is that Pastor Laura's time at church will be reduced by a day, and she will be at church one day a week and on Sundays.    We cannot take that action without an All Church Conference.  The All Church Conference will take place on  September 17 at 7:00pm.   It is a one agenda item All Church Conference.  Our normal Core Leaders Team meeting will follow immediately at  7:30pm .  As always, anyone is welcome to attend the All Church Conference and all are welcome to attend any meeting of the Core Leadership Team.

Committees are forming to hire new staff.  The search committee for the second service choir director includes: Dorothy Beeman, Robbin Price, Laura Baumgartner, Peter & Carolyn Coffee.  They will be meeting soon to begin that search.  If you would like to be a part of that group, please let any of the members of that committee know.  Peter Narmita will head the search committee for a new facility manager.  If you are willing to serve on a search committee and/or volunteer to help with grounds maintenance, please let Peter know.   As many of you are aware, we have already made a change regarding our custodial work.  We now have an outside contractor doing the work for both the Preschool and the Church.  If you have questions about any of that please see Dorothy Beeman in the Preschool office.  She is the liaison between Aldersgate and the cleaning company.

That's it for now.  If you have any questions about any of this please let me or Joe Lee know.  We're happy to share whatever we can about these changes.  Our ongoing hope is to be as transparent as possible about the things going on around us at Aldersgate.  Thank you for your prayers as we search for the next staff persons who will serve this amazing place.

September 2 Worship @ 10:00am
On Labor Day Weekend, weather permitting, we will worship together at  10:00am in the open air courtyard on the lower level of the church.  It will be the last Sunday for Hanae Straub our Chancel Choir director so plan to celebrate her ministry at Aldersgate as well as her new ministry in music education.  As we move from the August sermon series into fall programming, we'll gather as one body around the theme of Opening to the Spirit's Movement. We'll celebrate together in combined worship with elements from both first service and second service. We'll have some chairs but seating will be flexible if you prefer to use a camp chair or blanket. This will also be the day we offer back to school blessings for students, teachers, and backpacks. Then after worship, we will have the opportunity to stay and have lunch together. Plan to join us for this all church event!  If you can help with setup, potluck or clean-up please sign up or contact Pastor Laura .

Staff Vacations - Office Closed
Due to staff vacations there will be times when only volunteers man the church office or the office is closed this summer. It is a good idea to call ahead to see if the church is open before you come. The church office will be closed on Monday, September 3 due to the Labor Day holiday.
S lide Help Needed
Moving in to the fall, Pastor Laura would like to work with a few other people on designing and organizing the slides for first service worship. The process usually only takes 1-2 hours a week and is a lot of fun for creative, technology-oriented people. Please see Pastor Laura if you are interested, willing to learn the process, and can help as part of a team with this important work for the church.

Pastor's Study - Community According to Jesus
Starting Wednesday, September 19, Pastor Brad will teach a class that will focus on Jesus, and his views, teachings and actions centered on what it means to be community. We'll examine who is welcome, who belongs, and how Jesus identified each. Jesus changed the whole idea of community, but why and how? To begin we'll examine some of the specific pieces of the Old Testament and the Laws around what constitutes, defines, effects, kills and upholds community. From there we'll begin to examine Jesus as we spend some time in the four gospels. Then we'll take a look at Paul and examine the influence of Jesus on Paul; how Paul viewed and built community, take a look at 15 "One Another" verses, and what they might mean for us.   Click here for more information
