Notes from Shyrell the Garden Belle
Bulbs, bulbs, bulbs!
Here at Sundance we have ordered some of the best tried and true bulbs for our
area: daffodils, alliums, iris, paper-whites and more. We are bringing in some new
and very beautiful varieties too. Most will be deer and elk resistant because that is
just
something we have to deal with around here. Due to the late season bulbs are
shipping out October 2nd, and will be in stock the same week. We are so excited to bring them in for you.
Our Garden and the Weather
Fall is here but the planting is not over! Last month I mentioned the Farmers Almanac:

future forecast looks very much the
same as last year. Yes, it is what you are thinking, a late and dry 2019 fall into winter, and a late upcoming spring for 2020.
Why is this important? Watering will be a MUST for all your "new plantings" and your existing plantings. Warm days and cold nights, with a snowless winter can cause dehydration for your plantings. Therefore deep watering at least once a month with the addition of a good mulch, several inches thick, is a requirement to retain moisture for your gardens.
This weather forecast also means that we can still plant late into the season. The
first hard frost will be late, possibly well into October or November. This gives you some extra time to plant and design your spring color.

In general, perennials and plantings
start to wither and go dormant after
the first "hard frost".
Hard Frost is defined as: "A hard freeze is a period of at least four consecutive hours of air temperatures that are below 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2°C). Many plants can survive a brief frost, but very few can survive a hard freeze."
According to the Farmers Almanac the hard frost will be late in the season.
