Call for more ag research gets louder
Eleven prominent research institutions in the United States joined the Supporters of Agricultural Research (SoAR) Foundation Thursday in urging increased federal support of food and agricultural science. And a House subcommittee also heard about the importance of maintaining a strong agricultural research budget.

SoAR's new report, Retaking the Field-Empowering Agricultural Sciences for Health, explores the success of research projects funded by the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), the flagship competitive grants program of the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

Dairy Farmers of America acquires Cumberland Dairy
Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a national dairy cooperative owned by family farmers, announced it has acquired Cumberland Dairy; a family-owned processor of ultra-pasteurized dairy products located in Bridgeton, N.J.

Cumberland Dairy was founded in 1933 by Charles Catalana at a small, unassuming milk plant behind his family home. The company experienced tremendous growth through the 70s and 80s under the direction of Carmine Catalana III. Today, third-generation principals Carmine IV, Frank and David Catalana lead Cumberland's 180 dedicated employees.

Cumberland Dairy proudly serves some of the nation's top quick-service restaurants, convenience and grocery chains, wholesale food distributors, fine-casual restaurants, and dessert concepts to a variety of customers. The acquisition of Cumberland Dairy aligns with DFA's strategy to expand the Cooperative's commercial investments and ownership into extended shelf life processing.

U.S. dairy leaders call for collaboration
The importance of increased collaboration across the dairy community, defending the good name of dairy foods, and pursuing innovative new marketing strategies were key themes this week at the National Milk Producers Federation's (NMPF) 101st annual meeting, where 800 attendees heard from their policy and promotion organizations on how to create more opportunities for the U.S. dairy industry.

Hosted jointly by NMPF, the National Dairy Board and the United Dairy Industry Association, this year's event was themed "We Are Undeniably Dairy," building on a campaign launched earlier this year. NMPF's leaders, in their remarks to members, stressed the need for America's dairy companies to do more in collaboration with other marketing cooperatives.

Survey shows lenders slightly more optimistic
Eighty-two percent of agricultural lenders reported a decline in farm profitability in the last 12 months, according to a joint survey by the American Bankers Assn. and the Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation (Farmer Mac). Despite the continued decline, the survey of more than 580 agricultural lenders revealed that the agricultural loan approval rate is 84%.

"We were encouraged to see that lenders remain ready to assist farmers and fulfill their credit needs despite the drag in the agricultural economy," said Brittany Kleinpaste, director of economic policy and research at ABA. "Overall, the data showed that agricultural lenders are a little more optimistic about what's ahead for their customers than they were in December of 2016."

Make plans to join us for 34th DISCOVER Conference - Reexamining Amino Acid & Energy Interactions in the Dairy Cow
The 34th DISCOVER Conference that will be held May 29-June 1, 2018 at the
Eaglewood Resort & Spa in Itasca, IL It will focus on the interactions of amino acids (AA) and energy in lactating dairy cattle. The topic is important to the dairy industry because these nutrients do not function in isolation but each alters utilization of the other. This topic is timely because of its major impact on the environmental and economic sustainability of dairy production. The DISCOVER Conference will provide a venue for discussions about interactions of energy and AA and be an important source of new information. Conference topics include pre- and post-absorptive interactions, changes in energy and AA interactions over the lactation cycle, translating dynamic elements of nutrient metabolism into feeding systems and research gaps for the dairy industry.

Conference Topics
* Pre-Absorptive Interactions - Where Protein & Energy First Interact
* Post-Absorptive Interactions - Where Cows Get Stuff to Make Milk
* Changes in Energy and AA Interactions Over the Lactation Cycle
* Translating Dynamic Elements of Nutrient Metabolism into Feeding Systems
* Research Gaps and Urgent Needs for the Dairy Industry

Who Should Attend?
Members of the dairy science community who are interested in AA and energy nutrition of dairy cows are encouraged to register. This includes researchers, extension specialists and consultants from academia, government agencies and allied industries. Dairy cattle nutrition consultants, feed and crop industry technical specialists, veterinarians and animal health company representatives are invited. Graduate students are encouraged to attend.
