Ms Klara Tammany, Executive Director of
The Center for Wisdom's Women in Lewiston, who has been recognized for her powerful leadership and impact on women in Maine with a Women of Achievement Award in the field of Service by the YWCA Central Maine.
Sophia's House, a housing program for women initiated by The Center, is set to open in mid December of this year.

Bishop Brown was one of five Episcopal bishops who traveled to Capitol Hill in Washington on Sept. 24 for meetings with senators and representatives from their dioceses to advocate for preserving the U.S. government's refugee resettlement program.
"Brown identified two main topics he and the other bishops sought to discuss with the lawmakers: EMM's long history of facilitating the refugee resettlement program and the church's concerns about the cuts in the number of refugees allowed in the country." Read more of this story here on ENS:

Pre-convention hearings
Two hearings are held in advance of the convention to allow parishioners and clergy to learn about business to come before convention including the 2020 diocesan budget.
Delegates and clergy are asked to please attend in-person or watch the live-stream of one of the two meetings on our
YouTube channel.

Early convention registration closes October 4th
Registration prior to convention is required for everyone! All clergy, delegates and guests planning to attend should fill out the form below. Read Bishop Brown's welcome letter and invitation to register

Miqra: Standing on the Rock youth event in November
Youth from across the diocese are invited come and find their Rock.Youth in 6th-12th grade, along with young adult and adult staff, will gather to build friendships, play and pray alongside other teens, and crack open their faith.
Miqra: Standing on the Rock will be held at the Cathedral in Portland, November 1-3. We will explore Portland, play games, read through the Bible with fresh eyes and no pre-set answers, and discover how we are Standing on the Rock. Registration is $48 or $20 with financial aid. 100% financial aid is also available.
Miqra is Hebrew for "the public proclamation of Scripture." In order to support our youth, adults and congregations around the diocese will be invited to work together to read the entire canon of the Bible over the course of three days. Stay tuned for information about how to register to read aloud by yourself for 20-30 minutes, read with a group (parish, Bible study, family, friends, etc) or come to the Cathedral to read in support of youth there.

The diocese is exploring the potential for faith communities to source electricity from instate renewables.

Centering prayer workshop in Kennebunk Oct. 5

Introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop
on
Saturday, October 5, 2019 which will present the teachings of Fr. Thomas Keating who described centering prayer as "... a receptive silent prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship with God." The presenter will be the Rev. Deacon Darrell Blackwell of Holy Spirit Parish in Kennebunk. Deacon Darrell was ordained into the Roman Catholic Diaconate in 1996 and has been a Centering Prayer leader since 2015. Registration and coffee begin at 8:30am and the workshop runs from 9:00am to 3:00pm. FMI contact [email protected].

Service focused on the power of nature in Portland begins in October
St. Luke's Cathedral, Portland invites the entire community to take part in a new contemplative service offering,
World Too Beautiful, that will emphasize environmental and community values such as the beauty of creation, the interconnection of all beings, and the need for harmony, encouragement and healing. The services will draw inspiration from diverse Christian traditions as we welcome people of all ages and nationalities to share in reflection, readings, music and prayer. There will be a gathering afterward for refreshments, fellowship and productive conversations. Service begins in October taking place on the First and Third Wednesdays of each month from 5:45pm to 7:00pm. Download a

Pihcintu mulitcultural choir to sing at All Saints in Skowhegan Oct. 5
All Saints in Skowhegan invites you to a concert on Saturday, October 5th at 4pm. This joyous chorus comes from Portland, Maine, an ever-expanding international resettlement community, and brings together children from diverse backgrounds to sing as one. Led by Con Fullam, award-winning producer, musician, and songwriter, these vulnerable, yet brave, young women have learned to trust, hope, and laugh again.

Informational webinar for UTO Grant applicants Oct. 15
The United Thank Offering (UTO) has announced the availability of 2020 United Thank Offering Annual Grants. These grants are awarded for projects in The Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion, each year with a different focus. For 2020, the focus is Bless: Share faith, practice generosity and compassion, and proclaim the Good News of God in Christ with hope and humility.
Application information and forms are available here. The deadline for submitting a grant application is March 6, 2020.
