Fall 2014

top-final
Welcome to Fall 2014

As the summer curtain comes to a close and the arrival of fall is upon us, I, along with many of you have been greatly entertained watching the festivities and tributes surrounding the retirement of the great Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter.  Whether you happen to be a baseball fan or not, the more you learn about 'The Captain', the more you appreciate him not only as a player but also as a person.

Before the first day he ever stepped on to a big league field all the way through his last at bat in the heart of enemy territory (sorry Red Sox fans) his dedication to his team, his sport, and the fans who have supported him was remarkable.  Accolades came from all of the major league baseball clubs and players as well as some of the famous names of many other sports.  Although he was part of five world championship teams and holds many baseball records on his own, perhaps his greatest attribute was his dedication of doing things the right way, on a consistent basis for his team.  As a New York City bachelor with a wallet full of cash, you never heard about him getting into trouble at any time.  During all of the 'cheating' scandals associated with some of the biggest names in baseball his name was never spoken.  No matter what the outcome of a game, he never did anything to criticize another player.  His 'Turn 2 Foundation' has raised millions of dollars for underprivileged kids and given many of them opportunities that they never knew existed.  When you needed a clutch play to help save a game, there were very few names ahead of Derek Jeter that you would ever ask for.  When it all came to an end, he understood and expressed his gratitude for the fans because without them he would not be able to do what he loved so much.

I like to think that our team at Cedarwood Landscaping is similar and maybe, just maybe, he is following our lead.  Each and every day we pride ourselves on trust and reliability, working very hard to be the best in our field.  We understand thoroughly that you, our valued clients, have allowed us to be on your team and that is a privilege that we never take for granted.

Derek Jeter remained 'hungry' throughout his career, always trying to do better.  He worked hard and wanted to be the one in the clutch spot.  I hope you find that our company has the same philosophy.   If you do, please tell your friends.  If not, please tell us.  In the meantime, enjoy all of the colors of New Jersey's greatest season!

Sincerely,

J. Scott Mortensen, APLD

 TURF RENOVATION

The fall season is the absolute best time to reinvigorate your lawn! This includes the process of OVERSEEDING, AERATION and DETHATCHING.

 These procedures, when completed in the proper manner, help to make your lawn green, lush and full.

Another benefit: Your turf will require less chemicals and less supplemental watering to keep it looking beautiful. You will benefit by saving money, helping our environment and improving your property value.

Please contact us to be added to our Fall Turf Renovation schedule, as there is still plenty of time to complete this work before the end of the year!

FALL LAWN/LEAF SCHEDULE

As a reminder, with fall leaf clean-ups now being done during our weekly lawn service, our schedule tends to be slightly different than that of the warmer season, due to increased work load. If we are not at your location on our usually scheduled day, don't worry, we will not forget you!

FALL IS FOR PLANTING!!!

Now is the time to take advantage of cooler temperatures, increased rainfall and warmer soil temperatures, all of which help root systems establish much faster than any other time of the year!  This includes turf seed, trees, shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses!  There is still a great selection of plant material available!

Need a memorable gift idea?  How about a tree or flowering shrub?  Mark a special moment with an environmental benefit that provides generations of memories!

WINTER GARDEN PREPARATION

Now is the time to prepare your gardens!

As we saw last year, winter can be pretty tough on plant material! It's important to make sure that plants go into the winter as healthy as possible. Here are a few tips on how to keep your investment protected:

HYDRATION: The past few months have been very dry. Statistics as of October 2nd have our area at five inches below normal for the combined August-September period, making it the sixth-driest period on record for these months. PLEASE KEEP WATERING! Abnormally dry conditions can weaken a plants vascular system, especially going into the winter. Please let us know if you need a copy of our watering recommendations

GOT MULCH?: As you may already know, an adequate layer of mulch within your landscape beds provides insulation for your plant's root systems and greater water retention, as well as general weed suppression. It also helps keep your soil from being compacted while simultaneously lessening the chances of erosion. Additionally, this will be more aesthetically pleasing and improve your property's curb appeal.

ANTI-TRANSPIRANT APPLICATIONS: When the ground is frozen, water is not available for uptake through the plant's root system, therefore the water that is inside the plant is all that remains. Should this be lost through weather conditions such as wind, it can not be replenished. Thus, you end up with browning of the plant tissue commonly referred to as 'winter burn'. We offer a two-application program that acts as a preventative measure to lessen the likelihood of plant injury. Once damage to plant tissue has occurred, it can not be reversed. Please call to schedule this service today.

We wish you a wonderful autumn season!

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came,-
The Ashes, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The sunshine spread a carpet,
And every thing was grand;
Miss Weather led the dancing;
Professor Wind, the band....
The sight was like a rainbow
New-fallen from the sky....

~George Cooper, "October's Party"
