Newly Awarded NIH Grant on Eye Disease Research
Dr. Marc Kantorow, professor of biomedical science and assistant dean for graduate programs, received a five-year, 1.7 million dollar grant from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to fund research combating eye disease. Dr. Lisa Ann Brennan, research associate professor, is collaborating with Dr. Kantorow on this project, which seeks to gain insight for the advancement of regenerative medicine.

Surgery Residency Program Achieves 100%
First Time Pass Rate on Boards

Boris Hristov, for passing the American Board of Surgery Qualifying Exam (QE).
The 100% first-time pass rate for the program is an outstanding achievement!

Faculty Research Highlight
Dr. Joanna Drowos, associate dean for faculty affairs, and collaborators recently published the article, "Awareness and usage of evidence-based learning strategies among health professions students and faculty," in the journal,
Medical Teacher.
The research examines ineffective learning strategies used by teachers and students
and advocates the use of higher order thinking procedures and teaching content to facilitate the adoption of evidence-based learning strategies.

Faculty Recognition
Dr. Michael Smith, assistant professor of integrated medical science, was selected as a 2020 recipient for the upcoming 6th Annual Edition of Project 12. Project 12 is a calendar/resource guide, highlighting African-American male leaders in Palm Beach County who make a positive impact in the community.
Dr. Smith will be featured in the 2020 calendar during the month of April.

Dr. Sanchez was one of six finalists in the Clinical Vignette/Case Report category. His poster was titled, "

Student Scholarships
Whitney Winslow
, third year medical student, received the Vertical Bridge Charitable Network Scholarship for 2019. Dr. Mario Jacomino
, associate professor of integrated medical science, recommended Whitney for this scholarship in recognition of her participation in community service activities with multiple organizations including Kids Cancer Foundation, Hospice of Palm Beach County, and the college's Health Care Career Outreach Programs (HCOP).
Anthony Campbell, fourth year medical student, received the National Alumni Council Scholarship from the National Medical Fellowship (NMF) for 2019. Anthony was recommended by Dr. Mario Jacomino for his service to the underserved population of southeast Florida through HCOP, the Caridad Clinic Annual Family Health Fair, and Americorp City Year Miami.
Anthony is also the author of five research articles published in peer reviewed journals in the last three years.
Both students are recognized for their extensive community service contributions while maintaining excellent academic standing at the Schmidt College of Medicine.

Anne Fennimore, Ph.D., M.B.A., M.Mus., assistant director for marketing and communications, received a 2018 Highly Commended Award for her Dissertation, "Rethinking public service motivation: the role of communal narcissism" in the Management and Governance Category of the
Management Decision scholarly journal. Emerald Group Limited publishes the largest collection of business and management journals, and partners with the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), to reward excellence in research by sponsoring the annual Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Awards.
