Mid-Winter Update

    Mid-Winter Update

While in Atlantic City to attend a landscape conference, I found myself stranded in my hotel room because Mother Nature once again displayed her magnificence and my classes were cancelled for the day! With time to spare, I began to think about how the entire crew at Cedarwood Landscaping takes great pride in staying in the forefront of the landscape industry. This includes attending many educational functions throughout the year, especially in the winter months. The majority of our employees attend a variety of classes relating to turf management, plant maintenance, new plant cultivars, landscape design and construction classes which encompass walls, patios, outdoor kitchens, fire and water features.  We do this so that we can serve you better by offering environmentally responsible and innovative options. We understand that you have a choice as to who you will work with and we want you to choose us!

Although this winter started late and thankfully, we are not experiencing the fate of many Bostonians, it is getting to be a bit much! Please know that we are trying our very best to continue providing you with fast, reliable service, while doing everything in our power to keep your costs low.   With positive thoughts of warmer temperatures, the majority of our 2015 Landscape Maintenance proposals have been presented to you for approval. At your earliest convenience please send the signed contract back to our office, as our season starts March 1st (or as soon as the weather permits). Also, a reminder about our referral program: You can earn a credit of $100.00 should a neighbor, friend or family member (who lives in your immediate area) sign a contract for landscape services.

Quick note: Due to delays of routine winter work (due to the harsh seasonal weather) along with contracted landscape designs and plantings, our spring schedule is quite full. Should you have any landscape projects that you may be considering, please contact us as soon as possible so that we may discuss it and plan accordingly.

We sincerely thank you for allowing us to work with you. It is a great privilege that we never take for granted.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

J. Scott Mortensen, APLD

President

Snow covered boxwood at the Cedarwood Office

Due to the depth of the ice and snow, as well as frigid temperatures, it is increasingly likely that we will not be able to provide our second scheduled applications of anti-desiccant to evergreen materials. I am quite concerned that those plants which are susceptible to 'browning out', as was the case last year, may be put in a similar situation. This includes boxwood, which I am most concerned about, as well as other broadleaved evergreens.

We are doing everything in our power to keep this from happening and should the weather break in our favor, we will address this situation accordingly.

Mother Natures Magnificent Details

Not enjoying the 'brisk' winter weather?  Mother Nature offers a multitude of options that can be enjoyed year round.

Colocasia, commonly known as 'elephant ear' is often used in pool side plantings or woodland landscapes to tropically soften and brighten the flora.  This year we brought our wilted, tired, frost bitten elephant ear inside and replanted it.  It loves our Cedarwood office kitchen counter where it basks in the afternoon sunlight.  Yes, this is a close up of our largest elephant ear leaf...pretty cool right?

The benefits of indoor plants are priceless!

  • During photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide & release oxygen, the exact opposite of human gas intake.  This makes us perfect partners!
  • Through the photosynthetic and respiratory processes, plants release water vapor, increasing humidity very much needed during dry, cold winters.
  • Plants purify the air by removing toxins found in everyday household environments (carpet, vinyl, books, man-made fibers, ink, solvents and paint to mention a few).
  • Plants provide healthy environments and increase awareness.  Studies show that plants placed in hospitals, offices and college settings increased recovery times, decreased fatigue, headaches and cold-like symptoms as well as increasing  greater attentiveness.

Plants instantly warm up any environment!  So if you are as eager for springtime and beautiful foliage as we are, pick up a few indoor plants to get you through the next few weeks!  Need suggestions?  Feel free to call & we can share some ideas with you!
