Oct 19 Director's Corner
For the third time in four years, the Cornelius PARC Department has been recognized by the North Carolina Recreation & Park Association for its high-quality programming. At this year's convention, we were presented with the 2019 Innovative Programs Award for Laketoberfest! Coming up on October 12, which will mark its seventh year, this event at Bailey Road Park is a family-friendly, fall experience that has become one of the largest Oktoberfest celebrations around Lake Norman, attracting thousands of guests each year.

Laketoberfest's unique partnership with Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists (LNWC) is what caught the attention of the award panel. The partnership has resulted in much needed funding for their environmental and conservation efforts throughout the year. In the first six years, the combined net proceeds raised by the event and donated to LNWC totaled over $50,000. They have used the money to support their regional conservation efforts and to give back to the Cornelius PARC Department, by providing park amenities and educational opportunities such as interpretive nature signs, pollinator gardens, guided nature hikes, learn-to-fish programs and, most recently, a chimney swift tower.

Previously, Cornelius PARC received NCRPA's 2016 Arts & Humanities Award for our annual public art exhibition, Beyond Walls, and the 2017 Arts & Humanities Award for the Never Forget/9-11 Monument.
