TLGV Announces Team Walktober 2019
The Last Green Valley, Inc. is pleased to announce the US Army Corps of Engineers as the 2019 Team Walktober. TLGV designates one person, or team of people, to represent the best of Walktober. The U.S. Army Corps team of Michelle Cucchi, Nicole Giles, Cathy St. Andre and Glenna Vitello exemplify the volunteer spirit that has made Walktober a success for the last 29 years.
Brought to you by The Last Green Valley, Inc. (TLGV), the 29th year of Walktober runs from Sept. 21 to Nov. 3 and offers an array of adventures, with more than 200 unique experiences and more than 300 opportunities to enjoy autumn in The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. The Walktober brochure is free and details the guided walks, hikes, bike rides, paddles, tastes and events featured during Walktober.
The US Army Corps has been a part of Walktober since 1992, when it was Walking Weekend, and they offered a tour of West Thompson Dam. Since then, they have consistently offered walks, talks, tours and paddles not only during Walktober but year-round.
"The Corps of Engineers is honored to have a strong, long-standing partnership with The Last Green Valley," said Cathy St. Andre, Army Corps Park Ranger. "This collaboration has been serving local communities for 27 years while providing quality outdoor recreation to the public through the presentation of interpretive programs and fostering hands-on environmental stewardship practices across the Heritage Corridor."
The primary mission of the US Army Corps here in The Last Green Valley is flood damage reduction - they manage six flood control reservoirs in the watershed (East Brimfield, Westville, Hodges Village, Buffumville, West Thompson, Mansfield Hollow). Being the largest federal landowner in the national heritage corridor, their lands provide outstanding recreational opportunities. The Corps properties provide boat launches, swimming beaches, picnic spots, hiking and mountain biking trails, fishing, hunting, a campground, disc golf courses, and paddling opportunities on two segments of the Quinebaug River National Recreation Water Trail.
"We can always count on the Corps staff as key partners in The Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor and we're honored to name the US Army Corps of Engineers as Team Walktober for 2019," said Lois Bruinooge, executive director of TLGV.
You can enjoy Walktober with the Army Corps Park Rangers on the following walks: No. 38 Westville Past and Present, No. 58 West Thompson Dam Tour, and No. 62 Ramsdell Farm Historic Walk.
The Last Green Valley is a National Heritage Corridor - the last stretch of dark night sky in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington, D.C. The Last Green Valley, Inc. is a member-supported non-profit working for you to care for, enjoy and pass on the National Heritage Corridor.

Thanks to the car enthusiasts, spectators, vendors, sponsors, donors and volunteers who helped make this fund-raising event a big success. A record-breaking 130 cars filled the field and presented a tough task for the judges.
Awards were given in several categories. Gary Angelo of Dudley received first place in the General Motors category and Michael Morrison of Southbridge came in second. First place in the Ford category went to Dale Sprauge of Pascoag, Rhode Island and Francis Supulka of Charlton received second.
Mopar division first place winner was Richard Langmeyer of Upton and second place went to Frank Zicaro of Oxford. Tolland, Connecticut resident John Piader took first place in the Open category. And the People's Choice trophy was awarded to Ron Keogh of Webster.
Congratulations to Auxiliary member Carolyn Smith of Webster, who received a second place trophy for her Corvair Monza.
In addition to the car show, the event included a 50/50 raffle and a general raffle with an assortment of prizes from gift certificates to automotive-related items. The Harrington on Wheels (HOW) van was also on hand and offered free blood pressure screenings and distributed health-related educational materials.
Popular DJ Dick Salvas kept the crowd entertained with a variety of Golden Oldies.
Car show co-chairs, Kelly and Dan Hibbard, and several other Auxiliary members volunteered their time to assist at the event, which raised $3,517 to support programs and services provided by Harrington HealthCare System.
The Auxiliary extends sincere thanks to our three major sponsors: Main Street Tires - Palmer and Southbridge, the family of Milton Korch, Sr., and Long Subaru.
Since 1932, the Harrington Auxiliary has supported the patients and community the Harrington HealthCare System serves, through Southbridge Gift Shop sales, fundraisers and special events throughout the year. All proceeds are used for patient care related services, grants, scholarships and programs.

North Brookfield Savings Bank, in Partnership with the Community,
Continues the Fight Against Hunger with Annual Fall Food Drive
Annual Fall Food Drive from October 1 - 31 at all NBSB Branches
Community members of West Brookfield and surrounding towns were generous with their donations in 2018 to the North Brookfield Savings Bank Food Drive. Shown are West Brookfield Assistant Branch Manager Mary Antinovitch, Assistant Branch Manager Meagan Brousseau and Branch Manager Kim Brown with the abundant food drive collection at the branch.
As summer comes to a close and the leaves start to turn, North Brookfield Savings Bank is gearing up for their Annual Fall Food Drive fundraiser, offering the perfect chance to share some kindness, support the community and help those in need during the season of giving.
North Brookfield Savings Bank's Fall Food Drive fundraiser, held during the entire month of October, helps provide much needed food items to local neighbors and families in need. The Bank's goal is to collect at least 3,500 items total, but the Bank will be contributing monetarily and is issuing a challenge to the community.
For every item collected through the community, North Brookfield Savings Bank will contribute $1, for a total of up to $3,000, to help fund the pantries' operations.
Community members are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food items, paper goods and toiletries, or any monetary donations at any of NBSB's convenient branches anytime from October 1st through the 31st with the proceeds going directly to local food pantries.
Drop off locations:
- North Brookfield Branch: 9 Gilbert Street
- East Brookfield: 100 West Main Street, Route 9
- West Brookfield Branch: 128 West Main Street, Route 9
- Ware Branch & Business Center: 40 Main Street, Route 9
- Belchertown Branch: 4 Daniel Shays Highway, Routes 9 & 202
- Palmer Branch: 1051 Thorndike Street
- Three Rivers Branch: 2060 Main Street
Examples of nonperishable and non-food items that pantries can use are: paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, diapers and baby wipes; deodorant, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste; dry and canned pasta and soups, canned meats, tuna and salmon, peanut butter, jelly, tea bags and ground coffee; canned vegetables and fruits, hot and cold cereals, rice, cake mixes, pancake mix, syrup, powdered milk and granulated sugar; canned juices, baby food, baby formula, granola and cereal bars.
"The unfortunate reality is that there are people who still struggle with hunger close to home in our local communities. The Food Drive is a great opportunity for local community members and North Brookfield Savings Bank to work together to make a real difference in our communities by helping our neighbors," said North Brookfield Savings Bank President & CEO Donna Boulanger. "It is always heartwarming to see the kindness and generosity displayed through this drive by our communities and we are so grateful for the contributions they make each year."

Central Massachusetts' Newest Escape Room Opens Second Game
Experience "Merlin's Vision" at Escape the Pike
Escape the Pike is announcing the opening of its newest escape room game, "Merlin's Vision." The room, designed to simulate a castle environment, features a hand-painted window, custom stonework, hand-carved carpentry, and original artwork. Booking for "Merlin's Vision" will be available to the general public in October. Players may test themselves to beat the game and escape the room in sixty minutes.
The business opened with its first game, "Podunk" on June 1st of this year. To date, over 150 groups have challenged their ability to find the hidden objects contained within its rooms, as well as solve the puzzles and follow the clues which comprise the game. "Podunk" affords customers the experience of stepping into a multi-room bunker that is absent of electricity but ripe with prepper ingenuity. The effort made to combine an authentic feeling to the space with unique and clever challenges has been rewarded with over 40 five-star reviews and recommendations. Escape the Pike's newest room offers customers a different experience than "Podunk" with the same attention to detail.
Stepping into a world created by Merlin to test their aptitude and abilities, players who enter "Merlin's Vision" will find that it is absent of keys and padlocks. Technology is utilized to offer a magical quality and illusion to the game; one that will challenge each person's perception and interpretation skills. With large rooms and PG-rated content, "Merlin's Vision" provides an escape room option for families with older children; something uncommon in the escape room industry. The story line of the game recalls the familiar tale of King Arthur and Excalibur.
The business is located in the same building as Teddy G's Pub & Grille, at 179 Main Street, Sturbridge, MA. It is open every day from 2:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. Players may call (774) 241-0508 or visit www.escapethepike.com to learn more and book games. Escape the Pike can also be found on Facebook and Instagram.

Free Medicare Seminar
Mark your calendars!
North Brookfield Savings Bank's Next Medicare Seminar in January 2020
North Brookfield Savings Bank "Medicare - Countdown to 65" seminar attendees Diane and Roy Chaplin, Betsy Cuddy Martinelli, speaker Sue Flanagan and North Brookfield Savings Bank Senior Vice President of Human Resources Andrea Healy are shown in front of the crowd of attendees before the start of the event.
North Brookfield Savings Bank recently hosted a very successful FREE Medicare i
nformation session "Medicare - Countdown to 65" at the Ye Olde Tavern in West Brookfield to assist those approaching Medicare eligibility. The event, which was customized for people over 60 to help them understand their health insurance options outside of their employer-sponsored coverage, drew in a large crowd of over 50 attendees.
Those who attended the seminar listened to an informative, easy to understand, yet concise presentation about the ins and outs of Medicare. The presentation covered Medicare and Medicare Parts A and B, Medicare enrollment timeline, Medigap plans that help supplement Medicare coverage, Medicare Advantage plans, such as HMOs and PROs, Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, and plans and programs available to early retirees, such as COBRA. Delicious complimentary fare and refreshments were served following the presentation.
"We were so pleased with the interest in our "Medicare - Countdown to 65" Seminar. At North Brookfield Savings Bank we will always be there as your banker, but we will also continue to provide learning opportunities and guidance for our customers and community members when it comes to other important life decisions," said NBSB Senior Vice President/Director of Human Resources Andrea Healy. "The positive feedback received from the attendees was tremendous so we are already planning another seminar for early next year in order to provide ongoing support on the topic."
North Brookfield Savings Bank will be scheduling an additional Medicare seminar in January of 2020.
For those who wish to attend, they can be placed on a list to receive notification of exact dates and details by calling or emailing Andrea Healy at 508-637-7423 or
ahealy@banknbsb.com
.
Healy continued, "I encourage anyone who is over the age of 60 to reach out to me so we can keep you updated with seminar details. Whether you are planning to retire or not, it is important to understand all of your health insurance options available to you. As a local trusted bank, North Brookfield Savings Bank is happy to offer this free support and guidance."
North Brookfield Savings Bank offers learning resources and opportunities to customers, community members and employees as a way to empower them and help them to feel assured in their financial and life decisions. This aligns with the Bank's established core value "Commit to Excellence" which concentrates on elevating and lifting others up through growth and learning for success. In addition, the core value of "Support our Community" encompasses the Bank's goal to engage in meaningful partnerships and put people first. These two practiced values that the Bank strives to embody everyday are why they are committed to providing the community with ongoing educational support.

"The Literacy Project's Ware Adult Learning Center staff and students are very grateful to North Brookfield Savings Bank for their generous support. Annual Sturbridge Herbfest
Saturday, October 5, 2019
9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Sturbridge Senior Center, 480 Main Street (Rte. 20), Fiskdale, MA
This Herbfest is a brainchild of three local herbalists: Salli Greene, Jo Anne Grubert, and Chris Haller. There are very few herbal conferences nationally and none in this area. This can make it difficult for herbalists, young and old, male and female, to gain more education in a conference setting. Sturbridge, because it is centrally located, is an ideal location and it is expected that the Herbfest will be an annual event.
There will also be food vendors and craft, jewelry, and product vendors set up on the lawn of the Sturbridge Senior Center.
For more information call Salli, at Alternatives For Health, 508-347-2111.
