A Word from Pastor Tom
Dear Friends in Christ,

Last week I received a pleasant courtesy call from my friendly local gastroenterologist’s office reminding me that I was just a few months out from my next recommended colonoscopy. They encouraged me to call and make an appointment in timely fashion (perhaps to avoid the holiday rush!). And of course I plan on following up.

But that call got me to thinking -   I hadn't really thought about my intestinal health recently. Nor have I thought much about any of my internal organs. My heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, skeletal system, etc., keep doing their job, enabling me to remain among the living, but I tend to take them for granted until I feel some discomfort or sense that something is amiss.

This tendency to take things for granted can apply to the Biblical image of the Body of Christ. Sometimes we take other parts of the community of faith for granted. We tend to forget about what doesn’t directly impact us. We lose sight of the thousands of meals prepared for Austin Street, thousands of hours of faithful prayer by committed intercessors, thousands of hours of reading shared by reading buddies with area learners, thousands of hours of rehearsal by our music volunteers, thousands of invitations to worship and other events that many of us share with others, thousands of sacrificial dollars given faithfully by those who return to God the first-fruits of their income, and the thousands of diapers changed by dedicated nursery staff and volunteers. The cast of “thousands” could go on and on.

So this month we are pausing to give focused, prayerful attention to two things – the Body of Christ and all of our individual spiritual gifts within that body. My prayer is that we would grow in awareness and effective use of our own gifts, and in appreciation for the unique gifts that others have and use for the common good. If we do, this will result in two important outcomes:
  1. We will be living more into our created purpose, individually and corporately, leading us to have a greater, more gracious impact upon God’s world; and,
  2. We will lead lives that are far more rich and fulfilling!
To those ends, may God use this part of Christ’s Body, FUMC Coppell, in increasingly fruitful ways as the hands and feet of Christ every day. Remember – YOU are uniquely gifted – a piece of God’s perfect plan.  See you Sunday at 9:30 am!

Yours warmly in Christ,
Tom

P.S. As a part an endeavor to partner with and seek common ground other Coppell Churches, last year I was asked by Monsignor Henry Petter of St. Ann’s Parish to be a part of the Petter Endowment Board. This group raises awareness and provides grants for ministries/agencies that empower people who struggle with having the basic necessities of life in our greater area. For more information about this endeavor and educational opportunities at our sister church St. Ann regarding peace and social justice ministry, click here .

Third Grade Bible Sunday
Studying Scripture is one of the most important ways we learn about God. Each fall, FUMC presents personal Bibles to our third-graders, as a statement of their growing faith and capacity to study Scripture on their own. If your child is in third grade and would like to receive his or her Bible, simply come Sunday, October 20 when Bibles will be presented in both Sunday morning worship services. Contact Kathy Braem at [email protected] for more information.
Created by God
This seminar is for current 5th & 6th grade students and will be held on Friday, November 8, 6:30-8:30 pm & Saturday, November 9, 9 am-3 pm. Missions
Mission of the Month
October funds are designated for Raquel’s Dream. We began this mission as a partnership to help fulfill a dream of our 2016 Lydia Patterson Institute intern, Raquel Moreno. She was personally inspired by a mission trip that she took with our youth where repair work was done on area homes damaged by a tornado and wanted to take this idea and build homes in her area of Anapra in Juarez which is the poorest district in Juarez, Mexico. We will begin work on home number 5 with a mission trip November 22-26. Cost of the trip is $980. Signup for the trip by October 28.

We need to raise the funds to build home 5 at a cost of $5,000 per home. Make checks payable to FUMC with memo “Raquel’s Big Dream” or you can TEXT 2 GIVE. Text to 73256 with subject line as FUMCC. You will receive a link and simply follow the instructions.

For more information or to sign up for the trip contact Martha Hagan-Smith at [email protected] .

Reading Buddies (Student Mentoring)
One + One is a United Methodist partnership that serves children, changes lives, and transforms communities. The concept of One + One is everyone gives 30 minutes, one time per week, to one child. Through these one-on-one mentoring relationships here in Coppell, YOU can help by reading with a child, partnering with teachers and administrators, and praying for Coppell ISD. All mentors must complete a background check ( https://www.coppellisd.com/Domain/3443 ) and attend a training session.

Our two campuses are in need of more mentors -Wilson has 5 children without buddies and Town Center has 4 children without buddies. Contact Martha Hagan-Smith at [email protected] to find out how you can make a huge difference in the life of a child!
